Made the Mix today

Post  Kathiee1 on 4/1/2010, 8:01 pm

Hi, I spent a lot of time today mixing up all my ingredients for Mel's mix. I have decided that I'm definitely not as young as i used to be, and I'm calling Lowe's first thing tomorrow to encourage them to carry it. My vermiculite, even though it was a 4 cu ft bag was very granulated, very tiny pieces. Expense wise, I don't think the ready made stuff will cost much more, if as much, as i've already spent. I have a little left over, but just filled my one 8x2 bed. Since most of the rest of the raised beds have been planted, I'm going to change over one at a time...this being the one for now.

However, I have lettuce and radishes breaking thru, and beans are planted. Cauliflower and Brocolli plants are looking good, but it is getting hot all of a sudden. We were in the 80's today. So hopefully they'll grow up quickly!

I plan to mulch, just because of the heat and our backyards are all fenced in and i think that makes them even hotter.

Congratulations. Yep, getting the first batch of Mel's Mix made is an accomplishment. Luckily, once it's done, it's done. Very Happy

Congratuations on Mix....I have had no luck with local Lowes.

Post  Katch on 6/20/2010, 3:27 am

I am new and my name is Katch and this is my first reply to a posting. I think it is a bit fitting that it is based on the Mix, since that is one of the very beginnings of SFG. I am trying to remember if there is a recipe for products that I can buy in Charlotte, NC Zone 7b to make the closest thing to Mel's Mix, but I might need some direction. I have quite a few of SFG books and I have recently moved and the books are in storage right now. I do participate in our community gardening that is provided for a small fee through our Parks and Rec dept locally here in Charlotte, NC Zone 7b. I found the actual mix is only available for p/u in Utah (directly through SFG...long drive for me) or buy in Phoenix, AX area, so even that route could be quite costly. I have contacted LOWE'S with NO LUCK yet, but I know they carry it at locations that are very far away (as far as I can see to date). I am surrounded by Johnson and Wales University Chefs and Chefs in Training and they all want to buy everything out of the gardens, and I love the fact that they want to be creative and only use fresh items and especially from local gardener's, but for me right now, I have some room for some TT's and a few boxes, but the stuff (local Mix) I have been using lately, well, it just isn't cutting the mustard like the Mel's Mix. Any suggestions as to where I can go in my books or where I can find specifics on Mel's Mix or since I can't seem to find it or get it reasonably, what I can do to make the next closest thing to Mel's Mix. I would be most gracious for any help in this matter.

I really look forward to getting to know everyone and learning and sharing about the wonders of SFG!

PS-I still have to do my profile pic, but I will have to work on it when I have a few more winks under my eyes. I had difficultly getting it to host the image for some reason, or maybe I will be surprised when I post this.

Thanks again and Happy Growing and Living! Peace, Katch 3:22am EST
