Oh, I hope I get carrots this year! We made seed tapes a few weeks ago of 3 varieties of carrots: Little Finger (2 squares), Tonda di Parigi (4 squares), and Danvers 126 Half Long (2 squares). Then when I received my seeds from Baker Creek, me free seeds are Parisienne. I need to make more seed tape and find another square or two. Are any of these Nantes? Embarassed

YES!!! count me in with Touchon's! They are sooo sweet!

Menards has Burpee seeds 40% off so a pack of Touchon's are $1.

Plantoid- you are too funny with the world records! Wouldn't that be funny is someone actually got close?

I found this very cute tutorial on pinterest. My flour glue was a bit too thick, but it was very easy and tons of fun. And only a little messy.

http://www.giverslog.com/?p=2484

I did 4 strips per square. I hope to plant them every 10 -14 days.

That is just SO darn cool, and something you can do in the winter when you are not doing anything else, to prepare yourself for planting.

THIS IS what I love about sites like this SO much knowledge to share

There are several ways to do it.

I prefer to use an image hosting site like image shack or photobucket.
Or

Here's another method

Re: 2nd Annual Carrot Week

Post  yolos on 2/1/2012, 11:11 pm

I planted my first carrots this past fall. They were Red Core Chantenay. Very, very sweet. But this is not a Nanetes type.

So I guess I will have to do some looking around for Nantes types. But, my question is, if you are buying carrots at a gardening center (not a catalog) will the seed pack tell you if it is a Nantes type carrot ???

Also, why the Nantes type. Any special reason or benefit to this type of carrot???

If I remember right, for the 1st Annual Carrot Week a nantes type was chosen just so we would all be planting the same type of carrot at the same time so we could all compare what happened to the same basic variety in all of our different climates. For some it was a late start time and for others (like me, who still had some snow) it was an early start time. Every month on the 15th or so we could post pics or give an update on what was happening to that specific type of crop at that particular time in our little corner of the world. I had a blast with it! It was my first year with my SFG boxes and it really made me feel like part of the forum!

Sorry to disappoint you pale

Nantes where also chosen because they tend to be a shorter carrot and not everyone has deep boxes. It seemed to be an easy way to get the most involvement Very Happy

Sorry to say flour glue on seeds does not let you store them for more than a few days once you have done it .. the water in the glue affects the seed ..
In the soil they will grow , in a storage container they will die/ become sterile very quickly .

Totally stoked for the carrot-thon and was able to find four different brands of Scarlet Nantes at the same nursery earlier today. The one I finally decided on had fewer seeds, but was the only one specifying it was an Heirloom.
As long as it took for the 1st of February to get here, April 15th is
looking awfully far away. Very Happy

Re: 2nd Annual Carrot Week

Post  walshevak on 2/3/2012, 8:17 am

fyi, last year I found a pack of scarlet nantes at walmart for 20 cents and a pack of usda organic scarlet nantes for $1.98. Since I don't usually grow carrots, I used the 20 cent pack for 1 square each my TT beds and son's wicking beds. Nobody got carrots until late fall and I got the better ones. But we both had a carrot or 2 in Dec.

This year I'm going to use a cinder block's openings for a little deeper space, plant seeds a little more carefully and thin ruthlessly if I mess up on seeding. That's what the 20 cent pack says "thin ruthlessly to 3" apart". Razz

This year I have my boxes all set up, and since we have no snow, I should be able to plant 'in place' right on time. I can't believe what a difference starting in Spring is with SFG's already made! Last year was an adventure and a learning experience. This year is already less energy-output!

Carrots are fine, love them, but, checked my seeds, have several varieties, no nantes, except for those baby ones I think are nantes. Will check Walmart.

Okay, I'm in Northern Ontario but I'll have a go at this.... I may not be able to sow direct into the garden by April 15-18, depends on the snow and when it leaves.. but I can sow direct into toilet roll tubes....lol
