look what I found outside

Post  newstart on 2/1/2012, 11:29 am

I was outside getting some earthworms for our pet turtle and lookwhat I found on the ground Sad I picked it up and put into a nice dry place. I think its a praying mantis egg sack. what do you think? let me know if you think its still viable or where I should keep it. Last year we had tons of babies in the same area. so maybe. My avatar is one of those babies

that is a nickel next to it

Any thought would be great thanks

it looks flat. Is it flat? The ones I see on the internet are not flat. perhaps this one you have has hatched out already?

It is more flatish and long but is about 3 cm thick I would say. It does have a few holes on top so maybe they have hatced or maybe some type of spider?

That looks just like the praying mantis sacs that I find in several places on my house wall every year. Have never found one on the ground, but do see the babies and adults frequently.

Praying Mantises are great at pest control, unfortunately, they do not discriminate between beneficial and pest type insects.

This link has some great information on praying mantises (sp?)

May 31, 2010 - My wife and I are sitting on the front porch enjoying a glorious late spring afternoon when I look over and see this.

There were literally dozens of these little bitty guys who had just hatched. It was really neat.

That looks like the bottom of what the egg sack that hatched all those little guys above would have looked like had we scraped it off the porch. Ours was attached to the mortar right under that cap where the babies are hanging out.

Turn the picture upside down and they look so cute....

I don't think we have them up here, it gets too cold in winter.. minus 40 C sometimes...

Thank you so much for starting this thread!!! I have never seen one of those but for sure I will be on the look out for them now! Praying Mantis is not very common here, but I have seen a few adults in the past several years. What a Face

I found an egg sack at the community garden last spring. I was so excited to see them! Alas, they didn't survive the very wet March & April we had in Cincinnati. Maybe this year... I will have to go back down there & look around.
