Woodpecker?

Post  littlejo on 2/3/2012, 1:39 pm

I know a few of you are watching birds and here is a pic of (I believe) a woodpecker. Is this a baby or a female? During the summer, most of the woodpeckers look alike, with the female just a little duller in color than the male.

Yes, this is in the wood pecker family. It looks very similar to the Red Bellied Woodpecker.

It is called a Northern Flicker. We saw 4 of them this past weekend digging for bugs.

Thanks for the reply. There was only 1 that I saw. Have never noticed them before, but the weather is warm so I've been outside a lot.

Last year I was lucky enough to have a nesting pair of flickers in my yard. It was a season long treat. Love the red chevron on the nape.!
