Has anyone tried peanuts?

Post  growingsquares on 2/6/2012, 9:47 pm

Hi there,

My husband and I have installed and are readying our new square foot garden beds. I still have space for some perimeter beds along the fence line, and I am thinking about planting peanuts. I just wondered if anyone had tried this (particularly in the middle Tennessee area) and had success with it. The beds I have are constructed with 2x12s, and I wondered if that would be deep enough.

Thanks in advance!

Haven't done it myself, but have thought about it! Love fresh peanut butter! And it's just so expensive in the stores right now.

Keep us posted if you decide to do it with updates please?!

I grew peanuts a couple of years ago in my SFG, if was 6 inchs deep. It was the first time I ever tried to grow peanuts. I had pretty good luck with it. They pulled up really easy. I live in Illinois.

Thank you!

Thanks, Josh.

I think we will try it and I'm hoping for equally good results. I'm trying to figure out approximately how many plants are needed to produce one cup of peanut butter so that I can decide how many lbs to sew. Did you attempt peanut butter from yours?

Thanks!

Welcome GrowingSquares !!!!

I have not personally done peanuts but what a lot of fun they look like to grow Very Happy

Sorry I missed your post but I'm glad you've got all setup and ready to go. Are you using Mel's Mix in your beds? Fire away with any questions you might have.

Happy SFG'ning!

I did peanuts last year. Got them from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange because I wanted something specific for this area. Had no luck with them at all. Planted 18 plants, got a total of 6 peanuts! Shocked

I bought some from Southern Exposure this year, crossing my fingers it goes well, I'm in Cincinnati. Any tips Josh? Mama, did you have any specific problems? Like pests or anything?

No problems, they just never flowered.

I think I planted 4 to a square and I had 4 squares of them. My mom roasted them for me.
