If I built a 12" cube with an open top, could I then measure my own CF of stuff??

measering cubic feet

Post  landarch on 2/10/2012, 10:04 am

That would good way to measure...12"x12"x12" equals one cubic foot.

A typical 5 gal bucket is 0.67 cubic feet...in case you didn't want to build anything.

The beauty of Mels Mix is that the volumes are relative as all ingredients are the same measurement (1/3) so you could use a tractor or a teaspoon...a 5 gal bucket is readily available, easy to lift, etc....just go until you box is full.

For purchasing purposes, 25lbs is in the neighborhood of 1/2 cu ft. maybe a bit more. The only compost bag I saw last year that had both pounds and cu ft marked on the package was a 40 lb (.75 cuft) bag. That's why a measuring bucket is best for mixing.

SO using a 5 gallon bucket you would need around 1 and 1/3 to make a square foot roughly

When I got ready to purchase my composts, I "ESTIMATED BASED ON THE 40 LB BAG"

50 LBS = 1 CU FT

40 LBS = .75 CU FT

20 LBS = .5 CU FT

Remember, if you overestimate on the compost purchase, the remainder of the blend can be saved for the "trowel full" you add when replanting.

Kay

I bought 6 of the 20 lb, 4 each of the 50 lb and a 6 each of the 40lb bags. I mixed them all together and then used the bucket to get the 1/3, 1/3, 1/3. mix. I think I had a bit of compost left over after using a measuring bucket, but it came out pretty close. I saved the bit for adding to the squares on the second crop and top dressing some crops that lingered through the winter.
