Put some 1 & 1/2 inch battons/bearers round the inside walls so that they can take the weight of the MM on the base board . sot the base board on the top of the battons & screw them down onto the battons fromthe top .

Just nailing or screwing the base board to the underside might well not be strong enough once the timber gets wet and the fixings rust a wee bit along with a hevy load of MM .

Do I see a glass work station in the background? Oh yeah, very cute kids too! Wink

BOOkemdano, I like your table tops and the tenon legs. I remember you were placing hardware cloth and weed fabric on the bottom. Have you planned on cross bars to support the hardware cloth? If you have not checked this out, Boffer has some great tips on the thread titled Table Tops << Click there.

We installed brackets to hold the 2 X 2s and then placed the hardware cloth on top of the supports, securing the hardware cloth with big washers and deck screws. Hope this photo helps

Thanks for the tips, folks!

I plan to put in some 2x4 supports in the longer boxes, then use fencing staples (U-nails) to affix the landscaping and hardware cloth to the underside.

Yes, that is a stained glass workbench back there! I'm mostly a woodturner, but I dabble in glass, among other things.

TT

Post  B00kemdano on 2/20/2012, 9:27 pm

I finished building my tables today. At the bottom, I put a layer of landscape fabric, then a layer of hardware cloth. It should hold the weight of MM, water, and plants with no problem.

They are all placed 30" apart, which is enough room for me to get through with no trouble.

Any concerns with this setup? (Besides the AC exhaust.)

BOOKemdano, I think the setup looks great. Your TT's are beautiful. However, I know you are new, BUT.....

please don't post photos of your kids without a "Cuteness Overload Alert"!!!! They are adorable! That little one in front....oh my goodness!

Love your name, by the way!

filled the tables!

Post  B00kemdano on 2/23/2012, 9:36 pm

I managed to pick up everything I needed today at our neighborhood nursery. Today's truck brought in some 4 cu ft bags of vermiculite, so I was able to get everything in one stop.

Despite it being excessively windy today, I was able to mix up about 30 cu ft of MM using all kinds of poop compost, and some cotton burr compost - only available in the deep south, I suppose.

I got all my tables filled, and even topped off the flower box outside the picture window. I'm sure this year's flowers will be much happier than last year's flowers were! Very Happy

Oh, and, thanks, Martha! That little girl is my princess. Smile

Very Happy

Yes, I save the giant JD bottles. I have a friend who makes lamps out of wine bottles that she's painted, and I keep trying to give her some of these whiskey bottles!

Lucky for me, my wife doesn't like to park in our garage, so I have a two car garage set up as a wood / glass / electronics / shop. It's my hideout. Cool
