Germination time (or when is it time to pull the plug?)

Post  arla on 2/20/2012, 6:51 pm

I planted a bunch of stuff a few weekends ago, so far nothing seems to have germinated, the lettuce is now almost a week late, the beets just a couple of days, the chard same deal as the lettuce.

When do you call it, and just plant again?

Hi arla,
I've germinated seed indoors in moist paper towels, jars of water, vermiculite, seed starting mix, and just plain old garden soil! But then you're in CA so you may not need to start indoors.
I've started seed outdoors in the garden beds and patio containers, too!

Where'd you start yours?
In any event, I'd recommend that you take a look at ANSFG pps. 252-253. Those 1st two charts may be of some help.

Hi Arla. Did you keep the bed moist? That's where I typically screw up.

Do you have any more seeds from the pack? I'd try a few between moist paper towels. I've done this many times in the kitchen. If they don't sprout in the time recommended (do keep the towel moist), or they mold (too wet), I'd call it a day.

Remember, roots go down before stems go up!

Do you know your soil temp? Even with just a single night at 28 degrees and few frosts, and most days over the last two weeks have been 50 and up to 60, my soil temp yesterday was still only about 38 degrees.

Germination times

lettuce is about 15 days at 41 *F
or 7 days at 50*F

spinach 23 days at 41 *F
or 12 days at 50*F

beets 42 days at 41*F
or 17 days at 50*F

You can always re-seed, and if both sets of seeds germinate, just clip out the extras. Seeds are Cheap.

*Smack* head meets table *smack*

I really should remember to RTM Smile

Thanks, it's been cold enough here to keep the soil temps probably lower (not sure what they are, soil thermometer is on the "to get" list, however overnight has still been in the 40's) so I'll just leave it for now, need to get my cold-frame built so I can do seed growing outside of the SFG.
