First seeds planted!

Post  OntarioGardener on 2/23/2012, 9:30 pm

So excited to get the planting underway. Onions seeds planted on Monday. Turning my 3' x 6' into a salad and salsa garden this year. Expecting much better luck this year since a neighbour kindly cut down a nasty Manitoba Maple that was blocking most of my sun last year.

It is a pain when the shade is coming from next door and you cannot do anything about it. Very exciting to get going yeah? Sounds like spring fever to me.

*SIGH* My last frost date is May 24ish or so. I still have a long way to wait before I start planting.

onion seedlings are up!

Post  OntarioGardener on 3/4/2012, 6:09 pm

What a crazy winter we have had! My crocuses are up and the tulips are already 2" up as well. On and SFG note - my onion seedlings have sprouted! Onto lettuce and pepper seeds next week! Last day of frost is April 30, but at the rate our temperatures are rising I will be able to plant outdoors by the end of March!!!!

That was the type of winter in southern Maritimes 2 years ago, now it's snow, rain, snow, rain.... it just won't make up it's mind. I envy the fact that you can do some gardening right now. flower

When do I plant this year?

Post  creativechar on 3/26/2012, 4:37 pm

Last year was my first time to have a veggie garden. Also new to Southern Ontario near Lake Erie. Since this is March 26, 2012 how do I know when to plant? Is there suppose to be a frost this year and do we wait till after that? How can anyone tell when our weather has been so crazy, especially this past winter? Any help would be appreciated. study

to the SFG Forum, there is a lot of information on this site, check out the hope page, on the left hand side, freely use the search feature, and certainly ask questions if you need to.
Regarding your current question, my suggestion: find out when you average 'last frost' date is, look at the information on the seed packs, plan and plant accordingly.

You are fairly close to me. I am in Hamilton and our last average frost date is April 30. I plan to put my peas in the garden this week. If you do not have Mel's SFG book, I highly recommend it. It has wonderful charts detailing when to seed indoor or when to sow directly outdoors, when to plant transplants, etc. Good luck!

Covering outdoor sown seeds????

Post  elysia on 5/1/2012, 1:49 pm

I have planted my very first seeds outdoors Sunday afternoon. I currently have the boxes covered with clear plastic and was planning on keeping them covered until I see sprouts. Yesterday/this morning I got really paranoid that somehow the seeds would get too warm but when I checked the soil temp about 8:30 this a.m. (outdoor air temp was 60 degrees) it was 60 degrees or even a little below so I left the plastic for the day. Am I making a mistake in leaving the plastic (I plan to cover at night regardless until overnight temps are a little more consistent)?
