I used Jing free download. You can copy anything on your computer and add text and arrows etc. It does create it as a PNG image so I opened it in Paint and saved as jpg.

Kate888- Show us where it will go anyway. Many of the photos we posted don't actually show the SFG either because they are too old or they are too far away...still it's kind of neat to see the overall setups where people are using SFG! I find it fascinating that some of us are doing it in a postage stamp yard, while others are doing it on acres of land. Some are under huge mature trees, and others in an open clearing, still others even on rooftops or decks...join the fun! Smile Just more proof that this method can be applied in SO MANY different ways.

Chopper - Yup - I used Jing too....but I actually just uploaded the .png. I didn't notice the .png and it appears the forum took that format...I guess I got lucky. Smile LOVE the free Jing download for the ability capture my computer screen with my voice when I'm troubleshooting something for my job. Smile

Kate888, I hope you read the other posts - their ideas for grabbing an image are much better. C'mon now, you still gotta post the picture - just draw in or point to your future SFG!

Chopper, thanks - I was still wanting an easy way to add the text and arrows!

UndertheBlackWalnut - I agree, it's fascinating. One of the things that struck me right away about this forum was how many people have so much land! The tagline on the book reads "Grow More in Less Space" and so I was attracted to it because I indeed have less space.

Re: My SFG from space!

Post  martha on 2/27/2012, 10:00 am

I have tried and tried to get a better image than this, but woe is me. I swear I have seen other views when I have looked before, but I can't find them now.

Below and to the left of the address marker is the patio. I have a combination of flowers and herbs growing around the patio and along the walkway to the entrance.

To the north of the building is my garden. If I look closely, I can see my boxes. I don't know if anyone else will be able to - they are quite faint, but I know where to look. I can't for the life of me figure out the two white parallel lines. There are SFG boxes there - but

Windsor.Parker, you've got a lot going on there. You're right, I'm not so jealous now that I see that #5 project! *lol* Thanks for the information about the roofs. So does that meant that apartment building belongs to you? Everyone has such different setups. So neat.

Martha, love seeing the restaurant from this view! You've posted enough pictures that I can orient things now. I can see where your compost piles would be and your garden beds. So fun!

Okay, you twisted my arm.
We have 1.8 acres, so lots of room for traditional gardens (but lots of shade,
too) but we were so sick of weeds that we all hated gardening. That is
why I'm SFG this year.

#1 my old garden, between the two trees here.

#2 is a gravel playground area, the jungle gym in the picture was torn down
since it was unsafe. This is where the SFG will go. Not any closer
to the house, but closer to the garage (tool storage) and the chicken coop (#3
- also not in this picture). The 2 rectangles to the west are concrete
pads that were part of a small barn/chicken house from the original farm (the
original part of our house was built in 1916).

#4 is The Bus - our 15 passenger van (we have 8 children and for a couple of
years my father-in-law lived with us, too.)

Just to the west, south, and east of us are corn fields (or soy every few
years). My 11 yo daughter, Sarah, wants to grow corn, but as I researched
it I found that it will cross-pollinate with the field corn and won't be very
good.

It's kind of funny. You can see a faint whitish line down the left side of the image. Well, that is the "road" that googlemap shows in the map version that is actually our driveway, although they're just a little off.

Yes, the building is our property too!
Just as soon as I strike it rich I'm buying that big empty lot that's adjacent to the building.
Then I can have a real urban farm.

This is a FUN and very interesting thread. Thanks for keeping it going.

You can see my patio square foot boxes here, and the space I had cleared for my four 4x4 boxes with sheet composting. At the point in time, I was going to double dig and do in-ground planting instead of raised beds for financial reasons.

Wow. I had no idea we lost THAT many shingles in the big storm last fall! Time to call a roofer! Shocked

Joining in from Down Under!

This is a very old photo, I think it's 2009 as there's been a lot of changes since this photo was taken. The green patch at the back of the house is shadecloth over our pagola which has since been demolished and replaced. The u-shaped gap at the front of the house is my carport and it has since been covered over as well. Where all the trees are at the bottom of my place is not so bushy now as the new neighbours have cut most of it down.

1 - You can just see the edge of my tumbling composter which moved a few years ago to make way for a corner garden bed with native grasses.

2- just above the 2 is the kid's swingset and slide and to the right you can just make out the shadow of the washing line which is between the swingset and the fence.

3 - Just below the 3 is the mandarin tree which I chopped down to make room for my SFG's. There is now one 3 x 4ft bed where the tree was and one about where the 3 is. Future expansion plans involve another two beds spaced along the fence between the 1 and the 3.

4 - is where my compost bin is now, behind the workshop.

Here's where mine is, while you can't see it (this was obviously taken before I put it in, the fact that the fence half-way up the garden is still there means this has to be at least two years old, however you can see the trellis, which is still in use today for the SFG vs the other garden I had.

Our garden from space

Post  tomperrin on 2/28/2012, 7:46 am

March, 2011. Just as we are beginning our SFG. Our garden area is outlined in red. The sun comes up in the morning between the two blue circles surrounding 40' high arbor vitaes. Our pickup with a load of bulk compost can be seen behind the trees. Our blue tarps for making MM are in the garden area. While we have room for expansion, we're somewhat limited by the trees.

Ok, here's mine.

I moved in Jan 2008 and this was taken in Mar 2008. Lost the pine tree on the right side of the back yard in the last hurricane. Now have 2 flower beds in the front. One on left side near front ditch and the other to left of driveway.

Tabletops sit on the septic leach field the right edge of which is that scar in the middle.

Mamachibi, you made me laugh. Missing shingles huh? Either you zoomed in closer than the one you posted, or I need to get glasses. Laughing

ericam, hello back from.... we call you down under, what do you call us? Our first peek from space at an international garden. *lol* So the new neighbors cutting back the trees - good or bad or neutral? I'll be a little sad if our new neighbors take out the trees on our shared property line, but I wouldn't blame them since they are gettings soooo big.

arla, I can indeed see your trellis. So you're an SFG convert then? Are you liking this method better? I would guess so, since you're hanging around on this forum still... Maybe I'm not seeing it right, but is your lot one of those long narrow ones? I see a lot of neat landscaping ideas for that type of lot, where you kind of move from "room" to "room" as you go further and further back on the lot.

tomperrin, epic! Mel's Mix in the making captured from space!

walshevek, hurricanes! Shocked Oh no! Have you posted pictures of your table tops before? I'm always interested in them.

Thanks everyone for the great shots! Love it!

The picture doesn't show the boxes. The pushy pin locates the boxes 70 ft. from the back of the house. To the left is the shed and behind it is the 3 compost bins.

curio, if you manged to save the picture onto your computer, here's a thread from boffer about how to get that picture here:

http://squarefoot.creatingforum.com/t129-how-to-post-a-picture-located-on-your-computer

If you don't yet have the picture saved as a file on your computer, then you can back up on this thread a bit and see some advice from myself and others about how to grab the picture and save it. Good luck!

Ok we'll try one last time from IE (Firefox is not playing nice). Here is my SFG from space (and thanks mamachibi for the idea of checking out out your roof shingles! Very Happy ) The oval on the left is where my boxes are. You can see two of the three (which of course is now 4 1/2 boxes) and part of the compost bin at the top. The red circle on the right is my rain barrels so I know this was taken sometime after June last year as that is when I put them in. The blue roof is my daughter's playhouse and I obviously left the hose out that day, whoops! Very Happy

see if this works

Post  curio on 2/29/2012, 1:58 pm

Ok, let's see if I got this right. Just in case, here is a breakdown:
Our property line is basically the edges of the image, with the exception that the top right hand area is a diagonal from the white roof at the bottom (shed and carport) to just about the middle of the top of the image. Hope that makes sense.
This was taken late last summer, based on the color of that front porch roof.
The garden total dimensions are 25x30 in this photo and the greenhouse is 8x10 and at the front corner (outside) of the garden. The garden has since been expanded another 10 feet towards the back of the property line.
The front corners of the garden are anchored by cherry trees, and the pond is next to a honeycrisp apple tree. All are supposed to be dwarf (but I think someone forgot to tell the left hand cherry tree that). We've had to remove the lower limbs of both cherries to allow more sun into the garden.
All that's behind the property line is greenbelt, complete with wild critters Shocked Shocked
