Hello from South Carolina

Post  SteveW on 2/26/2012, 7:39 am

My name is Steve and my son Dalton is taking the agi science class. for school work he must plant a 20x20 garden. We looked at the library and he and I like the SFG method. So here we are. Not doing a 20x20 but several 4x20 SFG beds. Look forward to getting help from here and eating some home grown food.

Hi Steve! to the SFG Forum. I would highly recommend getting a copy of the All New Square Foot Gardening book (2006) it is an easy, informative read. Send photos! Wink

Man, that is a lot of squares. Remember, that 20x20 garden assignment is probably based on a row garden and includes the area between rows, so plan accordingly. Also you might find the 4x20 bed a bit awkward to walk around. Also it will tend to encourage planting in rows in spite of yourself. Because of the intensive growing, your reduced sqare footage is capable of producing much more than a conventional 20x20 row garden.

Think about this. Lay out a 20x20 space to comply with the assignment. Then arrange a variety of bed sizes inside the space according to what you want to grow. Do you need more trellis area? Do you need some deeper beds for carrots? Would a 3x?? bed be easier to work with, or even a 2X?? trellised bed. The possibilities are endless. Then make up the best Mels Mix you can and knock the socks off the competition,

Kay
