Hello from Crossroads TX area and another newbie

Post  Hobbygirl2 on 2/26/2012, 8:59 am

Hi everyone and thanks for the posts and advice I know will be helpful.

I was first introduced to SFG in the 80's from a magazine article and was immediately convinced he had the right idea.

Unfortunately I haven't had the opportunity to create one until now and am starting with existing beds to be cleaned out and filled with Mel's mix.
The current beds are 4 ft by 88 inches and have older improved soil that has been allowed to go to weeds. A couple of months ago I turned one of the beds completely and removed as much of the weeds (native grasses, if you prefer) and covered with black landscape fabric.

The second bed I did a little differently. I dug all around the edged and piled it to the center leaving a 6 to 8 inch trench around the edging then covered with the fabric. I haven't checked yet to see the results and now the I have been reintroduced to SFG, I will be replacing the existing soil with the new Mel's mix.

I purchased all the ingredients for the mix yesterday and will be laying out my grids and planning my crops. My copy of the original SFG has long since been gone so I ordered a new one and received it on Friday. What a difference the new version is, much easier, and I love the pictures.

Welcome Hobbygirl2!

You are going to love your SFG's! The Mel's Mix makes them so easy to care for.

I started with the old book too and wore out my copy when I got the new book as a gift I converted (for the most part) and love the MM. I think I will hunt down a copy of the old book for the other info contained in it though. Oh and welcome aboard. I think we may be in the same zone are you in 9a?

I think I am in the 8a bordering on 8b. It changes and we are right at the edge.

I saw on Mel's website an offer for both the old and new SFG books as a bundle, you might try there.

Hobbygirl2

Glad to have you join us.

What a difference the new version is, much easier, and I love the pictures.
I also started with the old book and could not control the weeds. The new book, with the new method and Mel's Mix has kept me gardening.

Again, Welcome and please keep us posted on your progress.

Good idea then I could give the extra new book as a gift.
