WEED CLOTH TORN--ROOTS GROWING UPWARD--HELP PLEASE

Post  PatC on 3/8/2012, 11:50 am

After 2 yrs of SFG, I have noticed that my weed cloth is disintegrated or torn in several areas. Roots are growing up from underneath--probably from shrubs in the area. What should I do? Prune the roots and add more weed cloth? New to forum.

WEED CLOTH TORN

Post  PatC on 3/8/2012, 12:30 pm

I guess this question is a stumper. Going to get my pruning shears and more weed cloth. Warm day on the Albemarle Sound but windy.

I had to do this last fall. Dig out the Mel's mix , remove the old weed barrier, cut away as much of the root system as you can, and staple new weed barrier into the inside of the box. Good Luck and welcome to the forum.

I have the same problem after only 1 yr of SFG. I don't think they make the weed cloth as good as they used too!

If possible, put some newspaper or cardboard down, then add more weed cloth. that should make it more difficult for the weeds.

I have a running grass under the mulch, on top of the weed cloth. I've been calling it crab grass, but don't know for sure.

WEED CLOTH TORN

Thanks for the replies. I'll try pruning the roots and laying down newspaper before adding the weed cloth.

Man that Albemarle Sound is a big thing. I'm up on the northern end of it.

Welcome to another Tarheel. Where are you getting your MM ingredients? I have to go to Va. Beach for Vermiculite and that 5th compost was a challenge, I have started a worm bin to compensate.

There are different kinds of weed cloth

Post  tomperrin on 3/8/2012, 7:16 pm

Some are designed to last only a year, others have a 2 or 3 year rating, or even more.

I believe I had gotten the vermiculite last year at Kenyon-Bailey in Elizabeth City (across from Montero's Restaurant). The compost was bought at several places, Kenyon-Bailey, Walmart, Park Plant--even some from Greenville.

Gee. I shop Kenyon Bailey almost every week and have not seen vermiculite. Have to go there today so I'll ask. Maybe they don't put it on display. That's where I get all my Black Kow products and peat. I love that store.

so we left him in and changed our planting lay out....as we were trying to get him out we discovered the weed cloth in shambles.....so hubby just pulled all the weed cloth out Shocked
