My first crop of asparagus

Post  Josh on 3/19/2012, 6:03 pm

My first crop of asparagus. Last year I planted some asparagus in a 2 x 4 six inch deep SFG, It grew last year and I just let it grow and then cut it back in the early spring. It sprouted up a pretty good size asparagus sprout, and today it is really sprouted up and I picked a few.

You can see this year it's about twice the size of the stems from last year.

Good for you. Mine still haven't sprouted for this year in the cold northeast.

Ooohh... look at those pretty paths between your beds! That looks great! And the asparagus, too, of course!

Oh yeah...how do you keep the weeds from between the stones?

The asparagus is fantastic. JEALOUS! How do you get thin versus thick sprouts?

Josh, how fast do Asparagus grow that you have already cut long stems by 3/19? I found 3 little heads in my garden Saturday, and 2 more today. I'm stoked!

Cool Josh! I just found my first asparagus sprout yesterday - way early for this area, but with basically no winter I had to check! This will be my first year that I can harvest a few sprouts. I hope mine look as good as yours!

Hmmm....

Fellow plotter had 3 crowns planted (he doesn't know what kind). Planted about 3' apart in a 10' row.

He pulled out two of them this spring because they weren't doing well (he didn't know it takes years to establish).

The other day I noticed one of the plants he "removed" has returned (the one he left I'm watching to see if it gets berries, as it has flower buds), and in one THICK asparagus coming up where the middle plant was "removed!" It's so thick, it looks like a finger coming out of the dirt! LOL
