Tomato Tuesday 2012

Post  Goosegirl on 3/21/2012, 7:14 am

I had to do it! The weather has been so good that I started my tomatoes a few weeks early!

There really are seeds in there - these are my tomato pots 1 day after planting. Sad, I know, but I am SO ready to start gardening!

1st Tuesday after planting:

2nd Tuesday after planting:

The only variety (out of 10) that does not have at least 1 sprout is the White Bush (and the peppers, of course, but they are NOTORIOUSLY slow).

It is cool that your camera lists the date that the picture was taken, makes for less stuff to keep track of.
Pepper ARE so slow....
My problem is that I also planted eggplant and they really look similar at this stage, although I can keep most things separate..
Eggplant is about as slow as peppers.... I think

It is TIME TO GARDEN Very Happy

I can't keep ANYTHING separate without tags, labels, or sticky notes! Every strip has a knife or fork in it to tell me what variety it is!

What a great use for plastic forks! I'll have to try that! I have a bad habit of not using labels and having to wait and see what grows! jocolor

Re: Tomato Tuesday 2012

Post  yolos on 3/28/2012, 12:25 am

I started my tomato seedlings (6 varieties) on 3/23. I planted them in soil blocks. This is the first time I have ever tried starting tomatoes from seed. I usually just buy transplants but I have had so many diseases attack my tomatoes in the past that I wanted to make sure I was not bringing any diseases in with the transplants. So I decided to start my own from seeds. All varieties have at least one soil block sprouting except Early Girl. Brandywine was the first to sprout and everyone of them that were planted have sprouted.

Mine are in the basement as well, but it is probably closer to 65°, plus the lights being in a relatively enclosed space heated it up a bit. I know they don't need the light for germination, but I had Hubby turn it on for a few hours a day just to give them some heat. My heating pad is still being used for my back!

yolos, see my post near the bottom of the "Status update for our little corner of the world" with my observations of my seed/started tomatoes and other crops vs those bought in the past as transplants. I'm very pleased.

Here are my brandwines and assorted others in the "truck bed". They were started around Feb 1st or so... I have been covering them with row cover (at the top).

(BTW, the truck stays parked 29 days outta 30.)

I'm very anxious to put in the ground, but waiting it out...

Good to know that peppers are slow. I thought something was wrong with mine. Anyone ever tried to grow Cherokee Purple tomatoes? They seem to be just as slow as the peppers. Meanwhile, my Amish Paste and Beefsteak tomatoes are growing like crazy and already need to be repotted!

My Amish Paste were some of the first ones to pop up! I lost my Tam Jalapenos due to bad watering (bad me!) but the Lipstick Peppers are doing well, altho' only 1/4 the size of my tomato seedlings.

Pics to come tomorrow - Tuesday of course!

As usual, a day late! I have been incredibly busy so far this week and had zero time yesterday to check in Evil or Very Mad Here's a quick picture of what my tomato seedlings looked like on Sunday:

Lol. Maybe it was Saturday Shocked I can't remember... No
Anyway, I'm using all sunlight for them and they desperately need to be up potted! I really meant to have that done several days ago, but just haven't had the time.

Logan tells me to slow down and take care of the tomatoes!
