Garden Ramblings 2012

Post  morganfam7 on 3/22/2012, 3:57 am

I'm trying this again. I guess I took too long last time and it asked me to sign in again...then poof! It was all gone.

I wanted to keep a personal garden record here like Lavender Debs wonderful record (my won't be so cool.)

I'll be going out of order I guess...doing a little at a time so I don't lose it again.

started 2/28

planted sugar snap peas from the feed store

What's in the 4x4 veggie bed now:
1 square Picklebush cucumbers planted by Sarah
1 square carrots planted by Sarah
4 Celebrity tomatoes from transplants
4 Romaine lettuce transplants in cinder blocks (Andrew) ate a salad from outside leaves 3/19
4 Red Sails lettuce transplants in cinder blocks (Sarah)
4 Green Leaf lettuce or BSS transplants in cinder blocks (Aimee)
2 Swiss Chard transplants in cinder block
1 flat leaf parsley transplant in cinder block

Blooming in the front beds and pots:

Front red rose, white and yellow irises, cyclamen, white viola, purple pansies, new creeping Phlox, Mexican Lavender are all blooming. Planted two new bushes. Sarah planted all kinds of flower seeds in "her bed."

Georgia Belle Peach waits to be planted. Planted and pruned the ebay Fuji apple which looks like it will thrive. Pruned Aimee's apple tree twice, and discovered that the joint was almost covered. I uncovered it, but not enough. Hope my pruning wasn't too severe. There were a few leaves on it. Tom Spellman at Dave Wilson Nurseries on youtube really helped with my understand of Backyard Orchard Culture. More peaches and blueberries hopefully this year.

New compost tumbler which I don't really like. A new bed and Red Wigglers! which I LOVE. I'll do those next.

Made a Blue Barrel (BB) Compost Tumbler We need a new trampoline mat Embarassed

Sarah's flower seedlings

Free mulch from our tour of the landfill / recycling facility. We got a barrel full of mulch, and we picked up a bunch of free pallets on the way home that I think I'm going to make into a 2 bin compost bin.

I added a case of rotten pears, our produce waste to the mulch, some cardboard bits, shredded paper,

Tumbled and left it for a day or so then I dumped it all out and added some molasses, a black trash bag of fresh mown grass, about 10# Starbucks coffee grounds, a box of moth infested cornstarch, egg shells, mixing plenty. Filled BB half full and tumbled. BB is sucking in on the sides, so I'm going to drill more air holes. I think I'm going to go back to the two bin system. The tumbler can be for kitchen waste and shredded paper and make the heavy duty compost in the bins.

Scored some bifold doors from the remodel pile at the street. Dh made me a new bed 6.5'x3.25'x about 9"! I don't have any MM or soil to go in it, so I'm impatient for the compost.

Andrew's lettuce: and the oregano we put in our taco meat:

Thanks for the encouragement Kay and Ha-v-v! I've got a sick kiddo and it's really wet back there. I can't wait to get back to it.
