Building a bed with a 3 year old

Post  lisaphoto on 3/22/2012, 1:07 pm

A couple of weeks ago, my son "helped" me mix my Mel's mix and fill my beds. I say "helped" b/c he mostly got in the way, trampled on my mix, and went "swimming" in the mix. But he thought he was a big help. He also helps show me how "your plants grow up Mommy" by plucking them out of their started cells. He is getting better this year so far with not destroying as much, but now little sister is mobile too.

Your little 'helper' is trying to do his best. I'm glad he's got a parent that allows his creativity. You'll make a gardener of him yet. Cute.

His favorite thing to do every summer is to help water the garden. Usually most of the water ends up in only one square, but we're working on learning how to water in different spots. He is a super picky eater, and I would love it if he actually would eat some of the veggies, but he won't. So I am growing more fruit this year, and he'll love that.

Oh and corn and carrots, the only two veggies he'll eat (even though corn is a grain, it's close enough)

Have you tried to feed you son straight out of the garden? I cannot get my boys to eat a salad in the house, but they will munch in the garden. Have you tried to plant seeds with your son? I foolishly thought that onion sets would be safe. They were big enough to handle. I found onions all over the garden that year, in paths, with flowers, in the herb garden... You get the picture. I finally put up some low fences and got him a small watering can and a sandbox for the garden. Enjoy your garden helper.

I built my grandson (age 2-1/2) a 4 x 4 sandbox just like my 4 x 4's and filled it with sand. When he gets tired of messing with me, he wanders over to the sandbox and plays by himself, allowing me to get something done.
