Couldn't help myself!

Post  peanut0915 on 3/25/2012, 9:19 pm

Although we are a good 7 weeks prior to our last average frost date, I went ahead and planted spinach, Parris Island Cos (a type of Romaine), Rocky Top lettuce mix, purple cauliflower, and broccoli today. It has been really warm here with highs in the 70's and lows in the 40's. I went ahead and put a cover over the bed after planting today to warm up the soil and to protect the seeds from a light cold-front coming in tomorrow. With highs back into the 70's after tomorrow, I'm hoping to get an early start on my spring crops.

Anybody else get the early planting itch and give in?

I have onions and peas planted as well as several types of leaf lettuces. I also put my broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussels sprouts, kale, and kolrabi seedlings in this weekend. My tomato, pepper, and eggplant seedlings are outside to harden off. I also planted asparagus crowns, blueberry bushes, and strawberries. I dropped some beet and swiss chard seeds in the ground yesterday too. I had 2 tomato plants that I had been growing in the window since the fall from sucker propagations. They were six feet tall. I put them in the ground with most of the stem buried so that only about 8 inches of the top of the plant is above ground. Oh, I almost forgot I have 3 different potato types planted in wire bins. Spring has sprung! I can't wait to get the warm weather stuff in Very Happy

Wow Braim5, you've been busy! When is your last average frost date? I've got some onion starts inside that I am considering transplanting this week, as well as some broccoli and cauliflower that I started a couple of weeks ago. This is my first time starting anything from seed inside, so it's sort of an experiment. I will have to see what the difference is between indoor seed starting and starting seeds in a protected bed outside. I will be starting my pepper and tomato seeds inside this week. Can't wait! Happy planting!

My average last frost is April 15th. I'm waiting to put in my tomatoes and peppers until then at least. They are easily brought in or put in my little greenhouse should they need some protection. Everything else, except for the 6 ft tall tomatoes can tolerate a light frost should it happen. It is sure hard for me to wait another 3 weeks... Smile
