Hi from San Diego!

Post  tiffanybrenner on 3/26/2012, 5:31 pm

Just wanted to say a quick hello. I'm somewhat of a beginner to veggie gardening (well have been doing it for the past 3 springs on a small scale). I picked up the SFG book this winter and built my boxes. And then early this month planted my first SFG. Well, to be exact about 48 square feet. Laughing I'm super excited to have found this forum and am looking for to learning and sharing stories!

Thanks for the welcome Ruth and Chopper. My garden is just getting going, so its not much to look at yet. But you made me realize I still should take pictures so I can see the wonderful progress! I've run out of SFG boxes I built, so my 6 year old son and I just planted more carrots and onions straight into the ground. It will be interesting to track their progress in box vs. ground. In addition, so far I've planted strawberries, zucchini, tomatoes, bell peppers, hot peppers, lots of different lettuces, spinach, bok choy, beets and bunches of herbs.

Ruth, I'm in Tierrasanta (just off the 15fwy).so my climate is similar to yours, I imagine. Although you may be a bit more coastal. I sprouted broccoli and more beets inside and they are now a couple inches tall. I think its time to put them in their designated SFG boxes. Can I put them right outside or do they need to acclimate first? I used the jiffy pots, in case that matters, that can go right into the ground so I don't have to disturb roots.

This is so exciting. I'm going outside to take pictures now!

My brocalli already produced a small head before they reached 12 inches...I think because of the hot spell we had a few weeks ago....disappointed..so will start seeds again...

I dont have any problems with planting seedlings directly from house to my tabletops....but jiffy pots I dont like.....its best to take out the bottom and open up the sides and keep a lil basin so it can hold more water.....they dry out so fast....

You will really enjoy this way of gardening......Ruth

Thanks for the tip about planting Ruth! I'll give that a try. Weather is beautiful today. Nice day to be outside getting dirty!

BTW, I thought I had posted this already, but I guess not. I started a blog so I can track my progress. Just posted the first pictures here:
