Wood Ash for Plants

Post  AvaDGardner on 3/27/2012, 10:03 pm

Speaking of composts and cold zones...

Do any of you have wood burning stoves or fireplaces?

Do you put the ash in your compost or directly into your dirt?

I hear it is full of great nutrients for your plants!

Re: Wood Ash for Plants

In my fall garden I planted radishes and carrots and both of those only had thin stingy roots. After doing some reading I decided to add some ash from my fire place directly to the garden and water in in really good. The radishes then really started growing and produced big fat radish bulbs and the carrots also grew but only a little bit. I took the approach that I could always add more if needed but it would be very difficult to remove if I added too much. I didn't see any negative effect from sprinkling ash directly on my garden.
