Peat moss and mels mix

Post  Mastiff07 on 3/28/2012, 9:15 pm

How important is it to have the specific amount of peat moss? I'm planning a 4x6 garden and I need 4 cu ft of each. I am able to get vermiculite in 4 cu ft. I can only get 3 cu ft of peat moss unless I buy 2 bags. I have a gift card so going anywhere else is out of the question.

Mastiff07, if you get 3 cu. bag of peat it will fluff up to probably twice that amount so you will not need get another bag, but will have some left over. Very Happy

Ok that's great news. Does vermiculite too? How do you measure the peat moss and vermiculite?

Vermiculite does not fluff up, only the peat.

The way to measure it is by volume, whether by scoop, barrowload or whatever you can use. I have a plastic pail and fill it each time with V, P and C in equal amounts.

One scoop of V. one scoop of P and one scoop of mixed compost then stir until it looks an even colour. That is the way I do it, in small bits as I cannot manage a huge amount at once.Smile

Mastiff - have you had a chance to read the All New Square Foot Gardening book? It gives you a TON of basic information. LOL we have people that say they can't put it down once they start reading it.

BTW even though it says 4 cf of each ingredient, Mel's Mix USUALLY settles, so you may want to make more. And we always recommend that you make your compost FIRST and make MORE of it than the other ingredients as you will need to add a trowel full after harvesting each square.
