What is your most hated weed?

Post  squaredeal on 3/29/2012, 7:45 pm

What is the weed that frustrates you the most? Yes, I know SFG makes weeding a breeze compared to traditional garden, but you will have weeds, and some will give you problems. For me, Virginia Creeper is my nemesis. If it is outside your box, it will send runners and come up inside your box. I pull and pull and pull, and it keeps coming back. I gave up and spritzed some roundup on it, and its still coming.

I have so many in my flower beds it's hard to say.

I had a few years where Japanese Knotweed was my top weed to defeat. It stills comes but if I cut it down quickly I can mostly keep it under control. It sends runners underground, so if I tried to pull it all it would take my good plants with it.

Suddenly this year I had something I hadn't even identified before and it's going like crazy. I just did a little searching and I think it is spurge. It also sends runners. The roots are not deep like the Japanese knotweed, thank goodness, but it is everywhere and it's mixed in with my vinca a lot, so its hard to get at without damaging the vinca.

Also, I have several mulberries in different locations that I have to cut back a few times a year. I can't seem to ever stop them totally.

hmmm... would have to be a draw between wild buttercup and Yellow Archangel. Both multiply by underground runner... and if any part of the root/stem/plant is left, it regrows... both are extremely invasive and nearly impossible to eradicate.
The Archangel doesn't even respond to herbicides Sad

Funny you mention virginia creeper
I have spent years trying to get a virginia creeper to grow, the various places i have lived
Perhaps I was lucky they did not.
I know clover is good for the soil, but it is SOOOO hard to get out, once it starts growing.

I was just fighting back the wild Muscadine Grape vine to the south and Virginia Creeper to the north so since I can't juice creeper berries I vote creeper is the biggest creep.

We eat our weeds. Purslane, chickweed, dandelion. But there's this snowstorm of white, puffy airborne seeds in April that get everywhere and sprout almost immediately. I have no idea what it is but I hate it! It clings to the underside of plant leaves to drop into the soil during the next rain. It sticks to your hair and legs. It piles up in corners in great drifts. The seeds never account to much, but they are everywhere!

ACK! I have to agree! I was just going to post 'wild morning glory' but I had to look up a pic of Bindweed since I didn't know what it was. IT IS WHAT WE ALWAYS CALLED WILD MORNING GLORY!!! This thing is the only problem I have had with my boxes. It grows under paving stones, black weed cloth or plastic, winds its way under my box frames, UGH!!! (where is that machine gun smiley?)

bindweed

Post  curio on 3/30/2012, 8:47 am

yeah, we suddenly had bindweed show up in one of our perennial beds a couple of years ago (bird probably dropped a seed) that we are still battling. I just keep cutting it off at ground level with a pair of scissors, hoping that at some point the root system will die due to lack of food. It MAY be working, since last year we had much less than the year before. I'll know more this year when it would normally rear its ugly head.

We have a weed here that everyone says looks like pot (marijuana)
It has a similar leaf structure in the summer, but from there it differs significantly.
It is extremely hardy, it has woody roots that go WAYYYY down, it seems to be almost impossible to get rid of, and there are tiny little new plants coming up everywhere.
Since I am new to the area, I have no idea what it is.
anyone else have pseudo pot plants

Yeah, I have that, too. I was trying to figure out what it was about a year ago, but couldn't find it. I have a couple of acres in a narrow lot and it's way at the back, not in my beds or near the house, so it has only been a minor nuisance so far.

Try looking up cleome or spider flower and see if the leaves are what you have... I did a Google search and that's what I came up with...also Texas buckeye - but that seemed less likely Smile

No it is not that
I will try to get a picture of them, these ones do not have a flower.
I know I had them in Oregon as well, but not so many.

Re: What is your most hated weed?

Post  plantoid on 3/31/2012, 1:50 am

This horse tail / mares tail is one of the most insidious weeds I've ever come across , it beats japanese knot weed hands down .

No known weed killer is effective unless you managed to rupture the waxy covering the plants have , then get a strong dose of the weed killer in the rupture.

It's a prehistoric plant , the roots go down many many feet and it grows as thick as a cavemans beard to a height of around 2 feet .

Every winter it dies back , new plants come from the tiniest sliver of the root , it sends out spores that lay dormant for a couple of years or more .

It has one slight weakness .. it does not like dense shade so drops off under the umbrella of brassicas and big leafed plants that are densly planted .... but those spores are there waitintg to spring to life once they crop is harvested.

It loves acid soil but will still grow in a slightly alkanine soil.
Burning it with a flame gun just seems to encourage new growth .

Giving it a shot or three with a 100 bar hot water power washer once every hour for four hours that has had industrial strength vehicle cleaner art max concentration in the additive tank to rupture the wax and bruise the stems then spraying it within 24 hrs with a brush wood killer does work but it is expensive and very time consuming , for you have to hit the area at least four times in the year to get results of any noticeable kind.

plantoid I hate horse tail as well, I live in a dry area, fortunately they do not seem to be a problem here, however this is my plant that looks like POT, but is very different, I know it looks a bit like strawbs emerging here, but it is not

CRAB GRASS

Crab grass is worse than any weed. I guess they plant it in OK so much because it is heat resistant....it is also weed clothe resistant as well. UGH!!!

In my yard it's trumpet vines the stuff grows everywhere I tried to burn it out one year it came back. I tried transplanting it to a different local it died. It's pretty much everywhere in the hosta beds along the fence rows. Most of time I just grab the runners and pull them up till they snap off or pull some of the roots up. The other half says they have pretty orange flowers, I have yet ta see any.

@kbb964, use the purslane as a lovely salad green. That way, she's not a weed but another wild (and nutritious crop). Like mamachibi, I love dandelion and chickweed too. both are so nutritious, especially dandelion who reaches way into the earth to pull up the minerals and elements we humans need for our bodies to do their best.

@Rooster, that is likely my worst problem too. I wouldn't mind it if it shared, but it doesn't. it usurps!

That looks almost identical to a weed that I saw growing next to my shed. It's the first time I've seen it and I'm wondering where it came from.
