I did it!

Post  TechnoHippie4351 on 4/1/2012, 6:39 pm

I am feeling rather victorious after completing the construction of my 3 4'x6' beds! I had a little bit of help, but did a lot of the construction myself! I was too nervous to try the circular saw, but I drew up the plans to build it. We used 22 1"x6"x72" dog eared fence boards for about $35. Not bad! The only thing extra I used were a couple of 4"x4"s to have as corner braces.

Anyways, here they are Very Happy !

You don't know me very well. I'm tool-less and a big tool-tard.

My brother-in-law was supposed to help me build my boxes this weekend but he had to postpone it till the Saturday after Easter.

@Too Tall

I am in the same boat as you Too Tall...not much of a handy man myself...thats why I buy my raised beds in prefab kits even though its a bit spendier....I am afraid I lose a finger If I ever tried my hand a circular saw.

@TechnoHippie

Thats some nice looking beds you have here Technohippie that quite an accomplishment....better than I could have ever accomplished.

T-Hippie

Congratulations! The boxes look good. One caveat: It appears you have bottoms in the boxes. Just be sure they will drain. I used weed block fabric on the bottom of mine so the grass, weeds, and hopefully fire ants would not grow up through it.

I'm in LA (Lower Alabama). The season here is well under way. Start making with your MM immediately. It's time.

T-Hippie, great looking raised beds. Congratulations!

As Cincinnati suggested, make sure you have at least one 1/4 inch drain hole in each square foot and another drain hole in each corner.

Hey FB - that's a question I've had...

If you put cardboard under the boxes, should you still put drainage holes in it? Does that defeat the purpose of the cardboard as a weed blocker?

All of mine have plywood bottoms and are raised off the ground so I have drainage holes as suggested...but didn't know about the cardboard...the OPs original picture looked like she might have had cardboard in the bottom...??? thinking

I put cardboard on the ground to smother grass and weeds. Water from above will seep out with no problem. Don't put holes in the cardboard and make sure the edges overlap well. Then I added hardware cloth to the box for the eventual burrowing critters which still allows the earthworms to come and go.

It certainly is possible I misread the photo. I thought there was a plywood base on the box. Plywood bottoms do need drainage holes. If it is a cardboard base under the beds, no I would not put holes in the cardboard.

I'm so sorry if I confused the issue.

Hey TechnoHippie - is that cardboard you have on the bottom of your boxes, or some sort of plywood? Smile

Ohhhh yes I'm sure it is confusing because BOTH. However, I just laid a piece of plywood on top of my overlapped cardboard boxes to keep the wind from taking them off. I'll pick it up before I dump my MM in. IF I ever do!!! I've been waiting day after day for my hubby to be able to help me. I'm considering trading my minivan for a pick up truck. Rolling Eyes
