Hello From Georgia

Post  fefehanif on 4/3/2012, 12:39 pm

Greetings,

I am new to square foot gardening and I am extremely excited. I tried my first hand at traditional gardening last year and was pretty pleased. A true southern gal..born and rasied in Georgia, it's in my blood. I look forward to all of the information and learning techniques.

glad you\'re here fefehanif!

Have you had a chance to read All New Square Foot Gardening (2006) yet? Most folks on the forum will tell you SFG is much less work than a traditional garden... Smile

Check out the threads on the homepage that interest you including your regional forum and search specific topics using the search bar on the upper left.

Are you planning to convert a portion of last year's garden or add to it? We look forward to seeing your progress...

Happy to have you here! Smile

Welcome. I am also in the Atlanta area, about 30 minutes south of the airport.

If you are going to do Square Foot gardening and need Vermiculite, peat and compost, Pike's nursery will have everything you need (usually). Some of it is more expensive that the big box stores, but you can get it all in one place. I have found a cheaper place to get the vermiculite is an old time feed and seed store. The store I found did not display the vermiculite on the floor, but when I asked, they had it in the back. It was $10 cheaper than Pikes Nursery.

Thank you UndertheBlackWalnut. I am going square foot gardening this year but my husband insist I continue to grow the moon and stars watermelons in the same location as last year in the traditional manner. We will see, it just depend on how I feel on that day. Even if I do traditional gardening...I am still thinking about growing them vertically. The vines were like 8+ feet long last year.

I purchased the book today but have been on the forum looking around as a guest for the past week.

Yolo: Thanks for the info. I am in Stone Mtn., but prayerfully will be moving to Fayette within a year.

I am so excited. DH built my box today and can't wait to start my seeds.

Has anyone ever heard of the chocolate sweet bellpepper?

Yes - but haven't grown them. Do a search for chocolate pepper in the upper left...I think the member The Cat's Other Mother grew them last year... Smile

another Georgian here, although I am a transplant from Virginia.

Will have to see if I can get to Pikes one day this week after work, so I can get the strawberries in in time.
