Is this the longest SFG bed ever?

Post  boffer on 3/5/2010, 11:23 am

TimWardell posted this in another thread that I thought most members wouldn't read-I didn't want it to go unnoticed. I think he needs a bridge across the middle of it-do I hear a second?

I seen this and printed it out and took it to work to show a friend of mine. He is a traditional row gardener, and he said he needed a big garden, it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks, so I showed him TimWardell's garden, and that did the trick, I have converted a traditional gardener over!

RE: Is this the longest SFG bed ever?

Post  jinx on 3/5/2010, 3:09 pm

I thought I was going out on a limb with my plans of a 16' long box. LOL! Because of limited space and materials, I didn't want to loose 3 whole feet of isle way to break the 16'er into 2-8'ers... and then extra material for a second set of box ends.

Very cool! A bridge? Maybe. I say 'Thumbs up to him for making it work'! We'll just see if he can keep from trying to step over the middle.

at 3 feet wide i bet he COULD step over it!

the temptation would be too great for me, i know . . . and my kids, forget it, they'd have a path in it in the first day it was put up.

Radishes

Post  SirTravers on 3/5/2010, 11:58 pm

Ha! if he did have a bridge over the box he could plant radishes uner it since they seem to like the shade.

Re: Is this the longest SFG bed ever?

Post  timwardell on 3/7/2010, 8:32 pm

Allow me to elaborate (since it is my SGF)... ;-)
The bed along the fence is 2' x 15' x 1'.
The bed along the driveway (that seems to need a bridge) is 3' x 24' x 1'. What you aren't seeing in this photo (because it's early in the season and I haven't set it up yet) is the trellis for my cucumbers and cantaloupe that runs along the driveway.
A 6' x 6' sits between the two and holds a 150 gallon fish pond.

Here's some pics from last summer.

All that Green!

Post  SirTravers on 3/7/2010, 11:21 pm

It's gotta be from all the browns I have here, but I love looking at all the green in your photos. Makes me miss living in the DFW area even more!

Thanks for all the kudos on the video. I know when I got into SFG I spent a lot of time on YouTube seeing what others had done. Some videos are better than others but I learned something from all of them. I'll make more videos as the season progresses and this winter - when I can't garden - I'm thinking of making a "Year in the Life of an SFG" video with photos and footage from the entire year.

Long Bed

Post  zoeyfarms on 3/9/2010, 9:43 pm

Hi - I don't mean to brag, but... our longest bed is 32 feet. We are a micro CSA farm in California and converted all our in ground beds to SFG last year. We have a total of 11 beds, all 4 feet wide, by an average of 30 feet long. Most are 6 inches deep, and some are 12 inches deep on the ends. We are just about finished with our newest bed, which is 12 inches deep; getting it ready to plant potatoes. Last year was our first year to be all SFG, and we had a great harvest. It's great to see others making extra long beds too. A bridge would be nice!

That water garden in the corner

Post  jollo on 3/10/2010, 2:23 am

Had to call my husband over to the computer to show him that fish pond/water garden in the corner.

"Honey...?," I said, and he just sighed. Maybe we'll finally get to use that pond pump we bought last year!

It's a lovely idea, one of those 'now, why didn't I think of that?' ideas. Thanks for the inspiration!

Kind regards.

As they say, necessity is the mother of invention. 1) The yard slopes away at the point in the yard so I was going to have to level it somehow; 2) we have two very small dogs and I didn't want them to fall in and drown; 3) I really, really, REALLY hate digging in the hard black clay we have here in the Dallas area. The "pond in a box" solved all three problems and did so relatively inexpensively. (In the year since I've installed it I've devised and drawn up plans for a much bigger and better pond. But that will have to wait for additional re$ources.)
