Josh's soda can guy

Post  peoriagrammy on 4/4/2012, 2:24 am

Hi All,
I had seen Josh's cute little soda can guy using grass seed and a nylon stocking on this forum some time ago...even saw a picture of it in his gallery. But the pic is not there now and after searching this forum still cannot find it. Can anyone direct me to the post of how he made it? I thought it would be a fun Easter day project for the grandkids. Thanks so much for your help!

peoriagrammy,
It's pretty easy, just take a knee high nylon sock, scrunch it up like
you would if you were going to put it on your foot, spread it apart and
put 1 teaspoon of grass seed in the toe of the sock. Then while still
holding the toe of the sock spread out add some soil mix, form it into a
baseball size ball, and make sure you keep the grass seed in place, the
toe will be the top of the head, and pack the soil tightly into the
ball shape. Tie a knot at the end of the ball of soil. Leave the long
end of the sock attached. Take hot glue and glue on eyes, nose and
mouth. I used craft foam for the mouth, hands and nose, felt would work
too. soak the ball in water to get it all wet, then fill a soda can
with water and stuff the long end of the sock down into the soda can,
that will wick water up to the ball of soil. Add some pipe cleaner
arms, I wrapped the pipe cleaners around a pencil, then hot glued hands
on and then hot glued the arms onto the can. For the first few days you
might mist the top of the head to help germinate the grass seeds, but
once the seeds are germinated just keep water in the can. It doesn't
take very long for the grass seed to start growing. It was fun to give
it funny looking hair cuts once the grass began to grow. If you need
more help just let me know.

Have Fun!

I'm going to go do that right now. My wife, who cuts my hair, might enjoy cutting the 'hair' on the top of a head for a change! Razz
