SFG Spring 2012

Post  philct on 4/4/2012, 3:26 pm

So I'm almost there. Have to finish the landscape cloth and mulch, build my second 4x8 box, and put the lattice in. that first box only has compost in as I built it before knowing too much about SFG... The strawberry planter is my first attempt at mel's mix. I am so sore from mixing it!!!

OH - THAT is so cool! Is it really as large in diameter as it looks? I am in LOVE! I love you Be prepared if you put strawberries in it to have a way to cover it so the birds don't reap the harvest before you do... Smile

It's 6 foot diameter on the first level... I bought it from Gurney's a month or so ago,and figured it's a good place to try out Mel's mix... I also bought the frame and netting to keep away the hungry birds, but have an upside down strawberry one jusdt for them!! Gotta keep the birds happy around these parts!! What do you think of the color of my mix? I'm so paranoid that I did something wrong (I added 2 bags of chicketty doo doo just for you

LOL - actually I had so-so mix last year (I was the beginner who thought 4 so-so composts was enough...yea WRONG! Sad ) and Walshevak swears by the Black Kow and Black Hen as her workhorses and I've heard so many other posters with chickens talk about how beneficial it is - that I'm trying it this year too. My plants already look better this year than last! Smile

Just make sure you get your mix nice and saturated when you fill the beds....and then go for it Smile

You will be fine okay because you care enough to ask questions and do your best....not everything will turn out perfectly, but not everything turns out perfectly for even the experienced gardeners...one thing, this obsession will teach you patience. Smile I'm confident you will have success this year! Smile

I WANT ONE! That is SOOO COOOL! So jealous. It's nearly as large as my entire garden.

Birds...If you treat them with the upside down planter won't they want more?

We have wild green parrots in the area (and seagulls, crows and finches). I've yet to see one in the garden (fingers crossed!).

Updated look... The metal trellis to the left is where I planted my raspberry canes (just two for now to keep it controlled). The buckets on either side of the walkway are blueberry bushes, the one to the lower right is 5 potato cuts. In the green tarp is a few CF of MM that I had left over... I'll use it in the next box I build in a week or two... Yeah, I don't listen to Mel's advice, I go big!!!

A little hard to see but those are my 5 apple trees (honeycrisp, liberty, gold rush, cortland, and pixie crunch) and one peach tree!!! Yeah, I do things small!!!
