Pearl Onions

Post  AvaDGardner on 4/9/2012, 12:15 pm

I was going through some old pearl onions (expensive little things!). Wiki says they were "single storage leaf" (as opposed to a garlic), and are not a bulb onion. Wiki goes on to say that in Europe true pearl onions are a staple of NoEu cuisine and also widely used for pickling. True pearl onions are a 2 year plant to reach their sweetness, (which explains the cost, yet amazing grow time for their tiny size), and the 'cheat' is to closely plant bulb onions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pearl_onion

Has anyone grown these? Did you start from seeds? Or just closely plant bulb onions?

I remember them being a pain to peel, and very eye watering!
