Mini-box joins the party

Post  marc-in-pa on 4/15/2012, 11:22 pm

Welcomed a new mini-box today.

3 new squares to join the family bringing the total to 57. This box gets loaded with snap peas next week, which will make one of my daughters especially happy.

Looking forward to starting year 3 with SFG.

Hope your gardens are treating you well!

marc, Congratulations on your new addition, which I am sure will be a great home for your snap peas.

Thanks Fursbalsmom!

A question for anyone who has built a box with a wood bottom... The plywood has 1/4 inch holes for drainage. I figured that putting the box right on the ground would be bad, so it's raised an inch and a quarter using runners on the sides.

Is that enough room?

Hi Marc! Pretty little box you got there! Is there a thread somewhere that shows more of your garden? I'm intrigued by the little glimpse that shows your mini-box! Would love to see more!

Hi Kittykat, Thanks! Here are some links to previous posts. The first one shows the construction and goes on a bit:

http://squarefoot.creatingforum.com/t2618-first-sfg-actually-first-any-kind-of-garden

Last year, the garden was modified to include gates that swing out on the sides:

http://squarefoot.creatingforum.com/t6884-sfg-year-2-pittsburgh

This is the 3rd year, and the tweaks so far are adding the mini-box and putting in a remote thermometer that connects to the internet and sends texts or emails if certain parameters are met (e.g. if the temp gets close to freezing).

In practice so far, the outdoor, wireless, internet-connected thermometer isn't necessary and is an extravagance. But it makes my inner geek happy!

Great work, Marc! MUST cater to the Inner Geek. Ya just never know what might happen if you let all that creativity get bottled up!

I love the ongoing garden pics. You've incorporated some fantastic ideas! One of my favourites is as simple as that little seat you put at the end of your row between the beds so you could sit and watch your garden grow... Lovely!
