The Plant Inn is open for business!

Post  cheyannarach on 4/16/2012, 7:50 pm

Got the Plant Inn completed today and filled with MM. I planted half of it (8 squares) with the kids, we have a cherry tomato, kohlrabi, bush beans, rainbow carrots, tendersweet carrots, beets, buttercrunch lettuce, and cherry belle radishes! So exciting, first stuff we got to put "in the ground". I saved the other half for my hubby to fill so he didn't miss out on all the excitement!

Now I just need to get the compst tumber up and running!

I will keep you posted, I've got some seedlings in there of tomato and kohlrabi, other than that everything else is seeds so I will be anxiously awaiting the little sprouts popping through!

Hi cheyannarach,

Just have to ask, what is your Plant Inn? Your garden?

Oh, that might just replace my bigger old greenhouse, it looks like it has the same useable space for plants, just more efficiently laid out since it doesn't use the center for a path for me.

What kind of bed did you build in it? Need pictures! It looks like the bottom is set up for drainage, did you plant directly into it?

Well I debated on filling it or just containers but I filled it with MM, it has four drainage hoses underneath and you can use remaining space underneath for other storage! It has 16 squares total and I have only planted half, the other half today probably! It is 46x46 so almost a 4x4 and it (growing space) peaks at 2 1/2 feet give or take, I should measure this, there are also hooks you can put in the top to hang vining plants! Online it is about $400 everywhere we looked (plus shipping) and we stumbled on this at Menards for $280!

When empty, how heavy is it? Did you build a base and secure it to the base?

It looks like if you empty it, it's basically, just a poly-shell with aluminum framing. I'm wondering if it would be easy to empty it, move it between season so it could be full sun in the winter and light shade in the summer?

It's not heavy at all when it's empty, a two person job but only because of the size not the weight. It is all light weight material! We have it on our deck and will anchor there!

Well! That just looks totally fun! I hope I don't see one around here somewhere - it might have to come home with me!! Looking forward to seeing it fill up with plants and watching their progress over the season!

I will post pictures tomorrow after I finish planting it! I have to wait for the hubby to get home because he wants to help and I need his phone to post the pictures! Last night was probably one of the coldest nights we are going to have from here on out and the tomato plant and kohlrobi look the same as when I put them in! I vented it this morning before I left for work at 5:30 but not too much because there was still frost on the porch so I was pretty anxious to get home and look at them!
