Mushrooms

Post  Turan on 4/19/2012, 12:19 pm

Has any one purposefully grown mushrooms in their squares?
I gave my hubby one of those kits this winter. It has lots of fungal growth but has never made mushrooms. I am thinking of burying half of it in an old raised bed with a heavy covering of straw and some weed block to make a dark tent. And then burying half in the corner of the green house with more straw. It was an oyster mushroom kit.

Thanks! The website you have in there is a wonderful resource! http://www.homestead.org/DustinEirdosh/Fungus/FungiFarmers.htm
It is useful for the Mycorrhizae thread as well.
Now to find out if hte oyster mushrooms we have been trying to grow are 'elm' type or not. Apparently the Elms have a symbiotic relationship with brassicas especially. Companion planting just gained a whole new level Very Happy

I just planted the mushroom kit. Half into the green house corner surrounded by fresh straw and dirt and half in the brassica bed in hte same manner. Now to see what happens.....

I just picked our first Oyster mushrooms! About 2 cups worth, some from the greenhouse and more from the broccoli bed.
