What is living on my cuke leaves???

Post  jms-ilm on 4/20/2012, 9:05 am

Was messing around this morning, training my cukes up the trellis when I noticed these critters on the underside of one leaf. They were only on one leaf of one plant out of 4 in my box. What are they, are they harmful, and how can I get rid of them if need be?

Those are aphids - blast them with a spray of the hose. Insecticidal soap too. Lady bugs will eat those.

Speaking of lady bugs, I watched a show last weekend that said not to buy
full grown lady bugs. They said to buy them in there larval stage.

Yup, you've got some aphids on your cukes. I've had good luck with just spraying them off, if they keep coming back, mix a few drops of dish soap in a gallon of water and spray it on the plants.

I've ordered the predatory wasps from Arbico for several years (Arbico.com), and they offer lady bugs and several other beneficial insects. Looks like ladybugs are 1500 for $12.95. I really like dealing with that company.
