Too Much Topsoil?

Post  Too Tall Tomatoes on 4/20/2012, 11:17 pm

I ordered screened topsoil/mushroom soil and had it delivered yesterday. I carefully calculated how much I would need to fill in the bottoms of my boxes. I did it several times. I got the formula from my cousin's husband(cousin-in-law?) so I know it's right. I purposely ordered a little more than I actually needed because I wanted to fill in some spots around my house.

Anyway, I ordered 2 1/2 cubic yards of the fill and my plan was to fill up the one box completely just so I can get the soil off the front lawn. With all of the other outdoor chores I had to do, this was the quickest way for me to get the soil off the lawn. Anyway, the one box filled up almost completely so I had no other choice but to add dirt to the other box. Well till I was done(took longer than I thought), both boxes are filled to within an inch or so of the top.

My calculations were correct. Is it possible that they gave me more topsoil than I ordered? I guess it's possible. I know the topsoil will settle but will it settle enough that I can put the Mel's Mix on the top of it?

It's supposed to rain here for a few days so I'm leaving the boxes uncovered so that maybe the rain will settle it down somewhat. I just hope it settles it down enough.

You probably got more than the 2.5 yards you ordered. I don't know where you ordered from but in my experiences with mulch they usually load the truck/trailer with a certain amount of scoops depending on the capacity of what they are using to scoop. If the scoop was a 1 or 2 yard bucket the extra half yard is a guess with the loader scoop. That's just what I'm thinking.

I ordered the soil locally....about 20 minutes from my house.

I ordered 2 1/2 cubic yards and the salesman/manager told me that they use a scoop that holds 3/4 of a cubic yard. It's no big deal really.....I'll just have to shovel out enough to give me the space for Mel's Mix.

That's how much I needed to fill in the bottoms of my boxes.

I did notice that it has gone down a little since yesterday.
