Checking in from Atikokan, Ontario

Post  Debora Cadene on 4/22/2012, 11:13 am

Hey all!! I am in Atikokan Ontario and our zone is typically a 3. Last year I built 4 raised beds. Two are 4 X 12@ 12" deep and two are 7 X 4@ 12" deep. I have had them covered with black plastic since last summer when they were built so I could get rid of any weeds that travelled with the dirt that a neighbor farmer brought for me. I kept one of them open as I had some tomatoes in a planter and they grew stupidly large.
I am looking forward to actually getting other stuff in my garden this season. I have plans drawn up over at My Smart Garden ( Debbie's garden emo ontario) Not sure how to get that picture here for you to look at...
anyhow...I am wondering if there is somewhere here to ask about cages and trellis's.
I have nothing in the ground, as we got a major dump last sunday and the snow is still trying to leave. I do have 4 tomatoes started....(woo hoo) and will probably end up getting alot of my goods already started from the local nursery in Fort Frances, ontario.
I have tons of questions...but for now...I just wanted to say hi.
Now I got some tooling around to do.
Debbie.

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

Have you had the chance to read the All New Square Foot Gardening book (2006) yet?

I would suggest putting weed cloth on the dirt in your beds then filling the top 6" with Mel's Mix as this doesn't have any weed seeds.

You can use the Search feature in the upper left corner and probably get a LOT of info on trellises & cages. Then if you don't see what you're looking for you can always start a new topic. Very Happy

I'm happy you found us!

Kim
