Yeah, wow! I saw something like this when I grew yellow squash for the first time, and had no idea what I was dealing with. They didn't seem to be harming the plant, so I left them alone. Big mistake.

Garlic crop 2017

Post  newbeone on 4/11/2017, 5:38 pm

After Transplanting my garlic from the old bed where it was growing to my new bed back in November, I wasn't sure what to expect well here's the results.  When I transplanted them I only planted four per square as they were good sized plants when I moved them. I did notice the ones with the slender neck produced a larger clove where as the thicker neck looked more like a onion.
Now I should point out I didn't buy seed garlic, My garlic came from a grocery store.

For some reason, the ones with thicker stalks resemble leeks.

Could Be but I didn't plant any leaks this year. Nope it isn't a leek just went out to the garage and cut into one had my wife smell it (I processed Horseradish today and my smeller is burned out) She confirmed that it smells like garlic. I'll process them rite away and save the heads.

With silver bells and cockleshells...

Post  BeetlesPerSqFt on 4/21/2017, 11:50 pm

With silver bells and cockleshells, and pretty sprouts all in a row squares:

I have this narrow bed /\, and part of a main bed \/:

Both were planted at the same time, and both with more than one variety (but each square has just 1 kind, at 4,5, or 9 cloves/sq.) The main bed had some time under plastic in the early spring, but has been doing better the whole time - I think the narrow bed was more exposed to the cold and suffered somewhat. I lost a few cloves in both, but a higher percentage in the narrow bed.  The large Music cloves are obviously outpacing the smaller cloves from the other kinds, but the main planting is also doing better overall. I don't think I have a comparison photo, but I think some of these are far outpacing last year's growth this time last year. It likely helps that I got the straw out of the way sooner so the garlic could grow UP, instead of struggling anemically underneath it.

Beetles, what is that plant in the top left corner of your garlic photo?
( my voice feature put in garlic Soda instead of garlic photo - gross, right?)

I'm guessing you mean the second photo and that you don't mean my dandelion sunny
That's one of my 4 collard plants, I think that one is Green Flash (Renee's Garden seeds.) They did really well over the winter and I've loved eating them (SO GOOD) so I want to grow their children. They've earned it. All 4 are bolting, this one has opened its flowers first (and I removed the nearby bolting komatsuna in the nick of time, I don't want to risk kollards or colmatsunas.) I hope they can make seed by 3-4 weeks from now. I tried to arrange my squares so that they'd have as much time as possible before I reused the squares. One actually got a raised bed put over the top of it, with a cardboard box keeping that square hollow.

(Maybe you can use that garlic soda in place of the tonic, with gin... but no... I'm not seeing that being a well-selling product. Your voice feature should keep its day job.)

In the top photo behind the narrow bed is a wild chicory flanked by 2 Queen Anne's lace plants. The weeds get a few squares in my garden, because the bugs like them -- more beetles for Beetles!

would you share your Horseradish recipe under the recipe section. I love horseradish and jalapenos. I guess it's the San Antonio in me.

Hope everyone can stand one more garlic picture.
50 bulbs of garlic finally all pulled up to dry and cure under a fan. In the foreground is my new stock  of 'Music' averaged 3 and 3-1/2 inch diameter. Older stock in the background, 'German Red' replanted last 4 years averaged 2-1/2 in. diameter. German Red in the past has given me bulbs bigger than pool table balls.  I don't know how the experts keep their stock so large.  Anyway, I'm happy to have what I got.  Can't wait to taste the milder 'Music' variety.  German Red is hot and spicy so a little goes a long way.

Thanks sanderson,  I'm sorry to read your planting didn't meet expectations.  I hope so much for you that this October brings you all the garlic you want next time around.
