When to harvest

OK, escaped the frost last night and guarden is looking good, but BIL asked me when he should harvest his garlic that he planted last fall. Tried the search, but all I got was something about harvesting the garlic flower heads (scapes?). If you want to get garlic bulbs, from bulbs planted last fall, how do you know when to pull them?

Hardneck garlic will put out scapes that can be harvested, Divine! Soft neck varieties do not put out a scape. When harvesting garlic bulbs, you need to wait until the foliage starts dieing back, probably in June in your area.
