Monthly Avatar Theme for May: May Flowers

Post  givvmistamps on 5/1/2012, 8:00 am

I don't have any flowers in my garden large enough to snap a decent photo of, so I chose a flower (and butterfly) I caught at the University of Florida Butterfly Rainforest last year...

It's May Day, show me your flowers!

flower Oh, and just for kicks and giggles, I want to show you this amusing photo I caught of a very confused butterfly locked onto my dad's ear thinking he was a flower. (It must've been his Hawaiian shirt!):

looks like a wild orchid

Post  hruten on 5/1/2012, 12:23 pm

It looks to be a wild orchid variation. Most people have heard of the "lady slipper", but there are tons of wild orchids around. They are not as exotic as we all think. We used to see a lot in NY hiking through the woods.

LOL right before I read this, I was looking out my window admiring my Irises. My next door neighbor (and best friend) gave me these when she divided hers. They came from her grandmother's farm in PA so they are very special.

I wasn't sure if they'd come back since my Bradford Pear came down in that area last year during Irene.

Wow, what gorgeous flowers you all have chosen! Shocked Looks like a botanical garden around here. Very Happy

I forgot to mention earlier that the UF Butterfly Rainforest has information on butterfly gardens, which of course means bees like them also, and that is why I posted the link in my OP...in case anyone wants to learn more about attracting some pollinators. Wink

Very nice Dave! Anything from a daughter is EXTRA special

My daughter gave me a wallet several years ago that is to small, and folds in a funny way that makes it somewhat uncomfortable on the rump. All the picture sleeves are busted and it's just kind of a mess overall. A guy at the supply house saw it the other day and the fits I was having with it and told me I needed a new wallet. I said I know, but I can't. He said why not? I told him because my daughter gave it to me. He smiled and said understood!

Kim, the Iris are beautiful. Glad they survived

Beautiful shots wolfheart! You too cheyannarach!

Everyone's avatars are looking great

And givvmistamps, not to offend but in that side shot of your pops, he looks like Tony Soprano Very Happy !! Sweet!

Thank you for the columbine photos! My DD has never seen one (the last time we were in CO mtns she was a baby...16+ years ago!). She loves them. Too hot to grow here, though.

My Lagerfeld bloomed finally (it's usually my first bloom of the year). I've had vases of it for two weeks (more than a dozen buds opening over a few weeks)...it was going back up as the avatar no matter what the theme!

One of my new roses, Stainless Steel, gave me a bloom too (many buds waiting to mature). It has the same form as Lagerfeld, but the color is just a touch of silver color on what would be white. Nice fragrance, too.

The board picked the theme well, LOL!

Flowers bigger than me! (And I'm 1/8th shy of 6 foot.)

These marigolds came home from my son's pre-school class when he was 5. I had never seen the giant variety before then. I just assumed that I was doing some awesome gardening to get them that big! rofl

Not this year but last summer, it was a volunteer right in one of my 4x6 boxes. The guess is it came from the neighbors garden, probably a bird dropped the seed. It was so tall, I couldn't reach the flower.
GWN your's looks to me like a type of wild lily. It's quite lovely. Very Happy

I found my first squash flower today, so thought that seemed like a good idea for my avatar flower! I have been so busy on my garden beds and some family medical issues this year that I've neglected the flower beds. The roses are trying to take over...but I see some strong competition from the nutsedge. Embarassed Ah well, at least I'll have plenty to keep me busy and out of trouble...lol

In most parts of the country 'April showers bring May flowers'

But, I live in the southern part of SC, March showers bring April flowers. Most spring flowers are spent for this yr. Roses are growing good, but, now I'm only into gardening for to eat. I have all sorts blooming, peas, potatoes, squash, tomatoes, eggplant, zucchini, cantalope, garlic, and my favorite is on the 2nd. blooming, strawberries!

Love all the pics of 'May flowers!'

Actually an April flower but I'll still use it. It is one of the earliest wildflowers around here. (Western South Dakota).

Okay, here's mine. Matchstick Flower (can't pronounce the real name) - called Matchstick because close up each of the little flowers looks like a hot pink matchstick with a purple head. Took this last week when I was in Panama. Came home to my irises budding, so hopefully they will bloom soon and I can put a flower from my own yard on my avatar!
