Was laughed at this weekend

Post  KelliK on 5/1/2012, 2:16 pm

By a couple long time gardeners, "You can't grow watermelons on a trelis! That's crazy!" , "You are going to put ALL THAT in your garden!" ,"No way you are going to grow anything but weeds the first year!" , "You are going to pay for WORMS and make a feeding tube for them!"

I'll show them. And then I will offer them any leftover compost I have (becuase I am nice like that).

In years past, I borrowed a tiller from my uncle (who has been gardening 25 years longer than I). He has an adjacent property, so he has seen my 4 yrs of SFG progress, and knows something is up... This year he came over with questions, pad of paper, and pencil. He took notes and I gave him a copy of the All New SF Garden book. Another convert!

Kellik scratch a tiny bit of fish, blood and bone meal in each square as a dressing and setting up boost a week or more before planting /sowing and water it in well if this is your first ANSFG bed . It's just to cover all the bases in the event of any purchased ingredients not being the quality materials they purport to be

I've said this for your beds develop in quality over a few years once you get making your own composted manures to Mel's formula . Plus I'd not like to see them have a giggle at your expense if things were not 100% ideal for growing in.

I find that serious gardeners do not laugh at "gardening in boxes". I'm harvesting while others haven't even started planting.

That is not a bad idea. Especially when all of your compost is store bought. Acts as a multivitamin to fill in any gaps you might have.

It happened to me with my neighbour. My first purchases were four different kinds of lettuce transplants. They kept me going all summer, just picking the outside leaves and made me a convert to this type of gardening.

You show them,Kellik, just take the advice you have been given. Please let us know how you progress.Very Happy

I just got an email from a friend in PA who sees the garden on my blog and is having second thoughts about restarting her row garden. I am going to direct her to the book and the forum. Seeing is believing. Last laugh baby!

Re: Was laughed at this weekend

Post  subsonic on 5/2/2012, 8:00 pm

when ever some one laughs at me I invite them over
this time of year when they see my tomatoes re flowering, my Zucchini has fruit already, my tomatillos are loaded with fruit, I have a refrigerator full of carrots, my lettuce and cabbage are going strong and I have 8 square feet of garlic 2 feet tall, my corn is recognizable as corn and my herbs are already being cut, they tend to ask me what I use for fertilizer and start asking for advice.
I tell them my fertilizer is mulch and rabbit droppings and there is a very good book on SFG out there they tend to freak as I tell them how simple it all is.
I just gor the new ANSFG book and will be doing raised beds next year, mine is the old style I have been doing for 20 some years. But I tell them I do not till, I use bark and leaves as top cover and can dig down 12 inches with a shovel barely using a foot on it and they rethink the entire rowed garden thing.
I let them know the secret is keeping a very aggressive mulch program and having the love of gardening, as we sit on a bench drinking a bottle of wine looking over the garden, watching the bees humm all over the place and relax they suddenly see that this way is so much easier.
WEED? whats that I collect my neighbors leaves so I do not have to do such,
WATER? oh no, see those bubbler heads, I use a timer for that
TILL? ground never gets hard if you top dress to keep the sun from pounding it.
SQUEEZE BETWEEN ROWS? You kidding, I have 3 feet between beds

Yea, row gardeners are funny working like that aren't they? Razz Razz Razz Razz Razz Razz Razz Razz

Just let them know you are laughing at them. They seem to not get that.

Is your bunny poo mixed with bedding? If so, it will need to be composted first. If not, several people have said it can go straight into the garden. My best friend from high school's dad told me that potatoes grown in straight bunny poo, nothing else, were the best he'd ever tasted.

I definitely have some that's mixed with paper fiber bedding and some with Timothy hay. But I can easily collect just the droppings using a screen.

You might do both, use some poo on the garden now, compost the rest with your other garden and kitchen waste.

Thanks for the advice. I'll be nagging my roommate to help me reestablish/rebuild the compost bin we made about 10 years ago and later abandoned. Time to put that bunny poop to good use!

Is the fish, blood and bone meal available together or separately? More than just showing off, I would like to have a really great garden to feed my family.

Thanks for taking the time to give me a tip.
