WI / MN border hopper

Post  darci.strutt on 5/1/2012, 11:04 pm

We live on the border of WI and MN - living in WI and working in MN. Tonight I completed filling the final box (box #6) with my recipe of Mel's Mix just before the rain started (yes it was dark). I have one box already planted with spring plant seeds, and big plans for the season. I'm very excited to find this forum! I bought the first book in the 80's, and just bought the latest version on my Kindle this spring. I'm not brand new to SFG, but things have changed a little. The early thaw meant we could get the old bed dug out, and put in a new garden of boxes without losing a season. I know I have a ton to learn and am trying to take very good notes this year so I can learn what doesn't work and what does. For now I'm watching those planted boxes for the first bit of green!

Welcome! I'm in SE Wisconsin.

Six boxes, wow! I started with 28 squares and added 17 more this year.

This is my second year growing a SFG, and this forum has been an incredible resource for me.

There really are a lot of people here who are happy to help if you have any issues, so feel free to ask questions with regard to transitioning from the "old method" to the "new method." Also, you will find many questions here that people would love to have your input on, since you're already an experienced gardener, so chime in if you have some advice.

I am in River Falls!!! I moved from Hudson to RF last fall.

I had 10 boxes last year and it was a bit much towards the middle of summer (sadly I didn't use Mel's Mix what might have made it much harder too). This year we have only 3 boxes - but they are all filled with Mel's Mix - and more than half full of veggies and herbs already!

We're nearly neighbors! I've been working with four boxes for a number of years so decided to go to six when I redid the garden. Hope I haven't bit off more than I can chew! I'm a veggie eater, and have been working on getting more fresh food into our diet. I say "washing off the dirt" should be the first line of most recipes! Good luck with your garden and fingers crossed for mine!

@darci - We are nearly neighbors!!

I love your saying 'I say "washing off the dirt" should be the first line of most recipes!' It is inspiring!

In my family, my seven year old son is the healthiest eater of all of us (99% of the time, if it isn't healthy he won't eat it).

Good luck to you too! Please post pictures as the season progresses.

Here is a picture of mine (as of April 16th):

If I find one from last year, I will post that later too!
