Southeast New Mexico

Post  fulfam on 4/8/2010, 10:57 am

Hi! I'm a new square-foot gardener from Southeast New Mexico (literally on the border of New Mexico and Texas). I would love to hear any tips, ideas, and/or advice on how to garden down here. Thanks!

Howdy Neighbor!

Post  Ages on 4/16/2010, 11:49 pm

Hey Fulflam, I'm in El Paso (East Side). Nice to meet you neighbor! I'm just starting with SFG this year. In fact, me and the family will be putting our box together tomorrow. I'll be putting some pics up as we progress. Good luck with yours! Take care,

Just one little piece of advice from a few years of trying to grow a garden in Pyote, TX (follow that NM/TX border down to I-20)...you probably need to figure out some kind of windbreak. Those hot windy summer days were really rough on my plants.

Howdy from Hobbs

Post  SirTravers on 4/30/2010, 11:45 am

well howdy from hobbs. This is my first year using sfg and im loving it. I started March 16 with seeds and some seedlings. My 2 boxes are coming along pretty well. If you are looking for vermiculite you can order it at Bunks feed barn in Hobbs. they get it in a few days and its the big 4 cu. ft. bags from sungro. just specify medium to extra large and they'll get the one you want. Happy to meet you and let me know how things are coming along with your boxes. Its interesting to see folks gardening in our crazy conditions.

Nice to meet you too! My dad was born in Hobbs!

Yes-let's definitely keep in touch about how our gardens are doing. This is my second year with SFGs, and I am totally hooked. We've built two additional raised bed SFG this year, along with a two tiered one for trellising. Check out my album!

With our covers on our growers, we survived the recent pseudo-tornados (50-60 mph gusts...yuk!).

Love em! Check out the pics on my album.

I just got back from being out of town for two weeks and amazingly enough the wind barriers I built for my gardens held up great and my garden was not destroyed by the horrible wind storm that happened while I was gone. Sadly I can't say the same for the roof of my house, I came home to find several shingles strewn about my front yard

Hi, I am new to the site and live in Las Cruces (by Oñate High School). I used to do SFG when we lived in Austin and had a great experience. I have not started anything here yet.
