Silly plan question

Post  Debora Cadene on 5/7/2012, 8:05 am

I'd like to draw out my garden plans so I can share them with you, but I don't have excel. Is there a spot I can go to get some grids to plan out the garden?
Told ya's it was a silly question.... Laughing

That looks like a nice garden planter that Goosegirl linked to.

You can install Open Office which is free software that is similar to Microsoft Office. In Open Office you can read files from Excel and all other Ms Office applications and you can save your files so they can be read by others using MS office. It is free so you can give it a try and remove it if you don't like it.

Ii my opinion Open Office is not as good as Libre Office. It has a lot more features and add ons. You can get it here http://www.libreoffice.org/

I'm sure there are other free alternatives to MS Office but Open Office is the only one I have used and I liked it.

MS tends to seek out any useful feature in their software and destroy if before the next version is released. I also like to get people using something other than MS.

I liked the one goosegirl suggests; I had trouble logging back in to it to print once I had finished all my planning (being technologically clumsy, that was, I'm sure, all me and not the site's fault!) Another one to check out is growveg.com (sorry I cannot post links) This is also a free 30 day trial with similar features to the one gardners.com has. (But just don't ask me how to post it in the forum once your done haha)! Have fun planning! Very Happy

Territorial seeds has one too that I am using. 30 day free trial. I posted the plan from it somewhere here. http://gardenplanner.territorialseed.com/

I wonder if they all have the same plan actually? I have noticed a lot of similarities in what people post, as if they are all using Territorial's SFG planner.

I am using www.growveg.com/ it also has a free 30 day trial and after that it is $25 for the year, but I like how it sends you planting reminders and tips for your area!

+1 Cheyannarach, I forgot to mention the tips and reminders in my post!! Also worth mention, even with the 30 day trial it will give you a list of how many plants per plan that you created (helpful because sometimes we get excited and don't realize we put 30 cucumber plants in the plan!), and show the planting - harvesting times for your zone! Very Happy

Re: Silly plan question

Post  Hoggar on 5/7/2012, 3:36 pm

FYI OpenOffice vs LibreOffice,

when Oracle bought out Sun Microsystems in 2010 they stopped working on OpenOffice. When Oracle called it quits, dedicated members of the OpenOffice community pooled their resources and set up The Document Foundation to provide structure and leadership to the continued development of the open source code used by OpenOffice the new product was called LibreOffice and now has over 300 developers committing more than 25,000 changes to continually improve on the new incarnation of OpenOffice.

if your interested its free had here is a link to what features it has.
http://www.libreoffice.org/features/

Hope that helps.

I use excel and it works, but I think I might have to try this! I like the idea of reminders and tips (and how many plants per plan).

Question: does it work well with ANSFG and Mel's suggested number of plants per square?

thanks!

Yep, sure does!! Very Happy you will have to select for it though, I think under options (it is easy to find if I found it!) Also when you start it has you put your zip code in, and then it will populate a list of plants appropriate to that zone (so no teasing you with things that won't grow!)

That sounds so fool proof! I love it! Thanks Brenda for the tips.
