I am indeed, in the deep south...

Post  daryl.weaver on 5/8/2012, 2:09 pm

We had virtually NO winter, so I took the risk on planting a bit earlier than our LFD. It paid off by a few days.

This is my first SFG...and I'm hooked!

Post  daryl.weaver on 5/8/2012, 2:14 pm

Thanks for the kind words! Unfortunately my garden space is very limited....just a walkway on the southern side of the house. I build 2 2x6 boxes (24 sq. ft. total) Next year I plan to use the AWESOME 2x3 rubber bins from the concrete aisle at Lowe's that someone posted about a few days ago. I bought one and have another tomato and and a zucchini growing in it just fine. By turning 6 of them longways, I should be able to go up by 50% to get 36 sq. ft. That will seem like the Ponderosa!

What kind of paint did you use on the outside of your boxes? I promised my kiddo that she could decorate our box.

Choice of Paint...

Post  daryl.weaver on 5/9/2012, 10:36 am

I used exterior latex by only on the outter edges. I coated the inside with clear polyeurthane...probably a no-no, but I'm not overly worried about it. It's not like this makes up the bulk of my diet and I can remember all the Seven-Dust and other pesticides my Grand Pa put on his garden, and most of us haven't grown a third arm...yet. (I hereby apologize to any readers having a 3rd arm if any offense was taken.)

Lowe's Cement Tub

Post  daryl.weaver on 5/9/2012, 10:43 am

Here's the info on the cement tubs from Lowe's. I'm sure Home Depot has them too. All I did was flip it over and drill holes about every 2 inches for drainage. Wish I had found them before I built mine.

http://www.lowes.com/pd_19252-1569-ST3608_0__?catalogId=10051&productId=1226689&UserSearch=cement+mixing+tub&Ntt=cement+mixing+tub&N=0&langId=-1&storeId=10151&rpp=24

If I use them next year, I will likely put an 8" little picket fence border (also avaialble from Lowe's) around them to make them look a bit less "industrial." My tomoto and zucchini are doing great in the sample one I bought.

Got mine at Tractor Supply

Post  hruten on 5/9/2012, 11:55 am

Welcome, I got my tub at Tractor Supply (lowe's is cheaper though!!)

Here is a pic of it rigged up with a trellis and has some leftover casters on the bottom. I'm not sure where my plants are going to to best, and I'd much rather roll than lift mature plants! The trellis was a bit onery to afix, but I think it will be fine with guide wires I put on. You can see my make shift pole bean trellis in two pots next to it. I've had those trellises for 3 years, it's about time they got used! It's amazing how much trouble you can cause with a drill and a dremel. What a Face
