I'm guessing the 'recommended spacing' has more to do with the soil than anything. With the super-rich Mel's Mix, and adequate vertical spacing, six feet seems excessive. Last year, I grew huge winter squashes in less-than-package-recommended spacing by training them up the fence and planting them in a hay-bale surrounded bed.

I'm assuming that gourds are similar to winter squash as far as their spacing needs. And, as you'll read in the All New Square Foot Gardening book (which I highly recommend you borrow or buy if you haven't already), winter squash can be planter 1 plant per 2 square feet, as long as it's climbing up.
