Just a little peed off !

Post  kbb964 on 5/10/2012, 9:48 am

Bed 2 seems to have a problem.
Mix made up within a few days of Bed 1. It has a little less of the good compost than the first.
Absolutely nothing has grown in this bed. No sprouts, not even a flipping weed since April 5th.

Yesterday I took off the grids, had a dig around and towards the bottom inch I found clumps of gray, white mold stuff. UGH. I began to dig out all the mix when the heavens opened and I had to retire to the house for cover.

Today is real cold, chilly , brr. When it warms up I will go outside and , ohhhh I don't know what I shall do yet. I do not have enough materials to completely replace. What I have dug out so far I may just distribute elsewhere in the garden or use to fill the bottom layer of a new bed I am making.

Any suggestions? I am flumoxed

Oh my! That's very disturbing. When it's warmer out and you can go outside, please take a picture. I don't have an answer, but I'm sure someone more knowledgeable can help.

Sounds like something I had in one bed last year in patches...looked for all the world like dryer lint.

The picture i took just now isnt very good. This is the bed that had lots of shore flies and smelled very chicken manurish. I am sure the mold is from the chicken manure, but I had the same chicken manure in the first bed . Admitedly bed 2 will have a higher concentration of the stuff as I had no worm castings left.

what I am thinking of doing is taking half the mix out and replacing with fresh.

NOW....... another difference between bed 1 and 2. Bed 2 has weed fabric underneath. Bed 1 has just double dug earth. Maybe it is not draining and just got too wet? Maybe I didnt put enough peat in. I really dont know. Just cant afford to chuck it out. Hubby will go mad.

As potatoes are not too fussy, I was wondering if I could use it to hill up?

The gray mold is a sign of rapid composting. It sounds like that bed got some fairly raw manure. Stir it up so it gets going faster. Then in 2 weeks you should be able to plant in it. I am guessing that the first bed has worms moving through it from below and this one does not? It might help to puncture the weed cloth under neath but I dunno they drain pretty well.

Adding peat might dilute it enough, but I would wait a bit.

Potatoes can not take high nitrogen especially freshish manures. Squash handles it real well though. Greens might do ok.

Good luck
