spotted leaves safe for compost?

Post  JustMe on 5/21/2012, 11:49 pm

We used to get our leaves already bagged from our kids' old school, but we changed schools this year.

Instead, we raked leaves from our neighborhood common area. The plan was to add them to our 'let-it be' compost pile that doesn't maintain hot temperatures. Looking at them today, the yellow maple leaves have black spots on them. Not sure why we didn't notice the spots in the fall.

Should these leaves be added to the compost pile or should I set them to the curb with lawn waste?

Is it possible these spots are part of the normal decomposition process? Many leaves get moldy as they decompose, and that might be why you hadn't noticed spots before.
