Bokashi composting

Howdy. I'm just jumping over from the Upper South forum and wondering if any of you practice bokashi composting or perhaps use bokashi as an accelerator in a traditional composting system?

I had to research bokashi composting (thanks Wikipedia)!

No, I've never innoculated my compost pile on purpose with additional beneficial microbes or other organisms. I think that whatever I put in my pile already has a good range of decomposing organisms: fresh and dried grass clippings, leaves, kitchen scraps, a bit of leftover compost from the previous pile, leaves, etc.

Hawaii is so "alive" that spores and beneficials probably get in the pile on their own Smile

Do you use bokashi composting yourself? How do you do it? What do you use?

yes i use most types. make them all my self. all the neighbors bring their egg shells to me. also use fermented extract, calcium phosphate, papaya extract works great on all plants a lot of information on the web, you can print Benefical Indigenous Organisms has all the inforamation for making at home.

Thanks for the responses and info. I don't practice bokashi composting myself - I use compost tumblers and have had decent experiences with them, but with their limited airflow, things can tend to go anaerobic. Thus I am researching if a bokashi/EM2 mix might help and I should experiment with a hybrid tumbler/bokashi approach.

HawaiiAl: thanks for posting about papaya extract... searching on that has opened up a few new avenues and ideas. Can't wait until I have to explain to the wife why I'm fermenting papaya.

make your own em-2 far better than getting riped off by foreigners. all em's very over priced. Hole lot of fun when you see your mix working so good. also try compost tea works great, you can add all kinds of stuff to the mix.if you have questions please ask will glad to help. Alex
