Most lettuce is 4 to a square. I plant 5 in a dice formation and pluck off the outside row of leaves frequently.

I'm still not sure I understand lettuce. I broad cast planted 2 squares - it is DENSE. But they don't seem to care. I pulled out a few here and there, but otherwise they are growing amazingly well. I'd say just toss those seeds out and see what happens!
