Question of mums

Post  cyclonegardener on 6/3/2012, 2:44 pm

We planted five mums outside this spring (May 5) They have been watered, fertilized, get full sun, but they don't seem to grow. We have some straw mulch around them to prevent drying, but not much. The leaves appear to be a little droopy, but a good green color.
Any suggestions?

Maybe leave them alone for a bit... My mums seem to do best if I don't pay too much attention to them. I am careful to not over water them, that's about it. Also, if you take a scissors and lop off the top inch or two of the plant, that may stimulate growth. Sorry, that's the best I can offer. Good luck. Very Happy

I'm nutz for mums but they continue to baffle me. I don't know what their story is but some grow and some don't. The ones I tend to ignore seem to do best. Other than pinching back until July 4th if I want fuller mums, I give them no special treatment once the roots are established after planting. This usually takes about 4-6 wks of watering 2 or 3 times a week for me.

I'm with camprn. Pinch back the middles of each growth or lop them off. Maybe that will help.

Thanks- think I'll try that, lopping them off at the top.
