hello from PA!

Post  sarah.amspacher on 6/3/2012, 9:48 pm

Hi all, my name is Sarah and I am working on my second SFG. We moved last year and I was quite tempted to take my beds with me, but figured I'd share the joy and start fresh. Well, I'd forgotten how much fun starting fresh was! The old garden was two 2x12' beds and one 4x12'... now I have two 2x9', four 4x6', two 4x4', two 2x8' and two 4x8' beds. YIPPIE! I love planning the squares and figuring out what to plant where and when. The old beds were 2x12 untreated pine boards, I was able to get some free 1x6" oak boards to use for now. There's another year or so left in them, and as they rot I'll replace them with the pine. I was a bit late getting started, our frost free date is mother's day, but I've got regular potatoes, sweet potatoes, beans, peppers, eggplant, corn, carrots, tomatoes, basil, swiss chard and lots of zucchini, winter squash and watermelon in the ground. I just put up a blogpost about the progress - bantamchase.blogspot.com Smile
Glad to have found the other SFQ junkies!

Hi Sarah and welcome to the Forum. I wish I had half of your energy (read your blog). Did you have trouble finding vermiculite, or did you decide to go with straight compost?

I was going to teach SFG at an early education store in York, but the owner had to sell the store.

Again, welcome!

I have seen women looking at jewelry ads with a misty eye and one hand resting on the heart, and I only know what they're feeling because that's how I read the seed catalogs in January - Barbara Kingsolver - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

Hi Sarah, and welcome. I am a bit north of you, but close enough for comparisons. I am also a first-year SFGer. I was out between the raindrops today tying some tomatoes to the trellises and found two nickel sized tomatoes on two different plants. Now I can't wait for them to get full-sized and ripen. They are both patio tomatoes, which only get about tangerine size, but that's OK with me. I do have early girl, better boy, beefsteak, and supersteak planted, as well as three that were on the table at the nursery without a label. It was a six-pack and reduced in price. I gave half to my son-in-law.
