What is this!? (ICK!)

Post  jheriot on 6/8/2012, 10:53 am

We just built our first garden (ever!) and we're going to be tearing out the grass and putting mulch around the beds this weekend. However, this morning I went out to yank out some of the long grass along the box and found a few of these (I admit I stopped pulling back the grass once I found them - grossed me out too much) Very Happy

They do not appear to be grubs (as we have had those in the past)... I didn't see any "legs" and it almost appeared "hairy" or like spiky-ish on the bottom half of it's body. I didn't get close enough to thoroughly inspect it though haha.

Any idea??

I might know this one, look at my avatar, I think it is larvae of a ten lined june beetle. The eggs are laid in the dirt of grass roots and the larvae feed off of the roots. The have hairy undersides too!

I just looked this up and it doesn't appear to be that either. It's not a c-shape and doesn't have any legs. Looks almost like a snail, but without the shell. It's like teardrop shaped. When my husband comes home I will see if he'll pick one up for me and I'll take a better picture Very Happy

Hi there! I am new here. Smile

To me, it looks like a slug. Could that be it?

Alrightie then! It is telling me I can't post a link yet, so I can't show you the slug pic. Sad

My other pic didn't show up. This was what I was trying to post!
It totally looks like a slug. There are several different kinds, and they love gardens, and love rain/wetness.
My chickens think they are delicious. Wink

Nothing like moving a couple bricks around one early morning and some sluggy thing quickly snapped and squished on my fingers.
It gave me chills blech. Think I wiped my hand in the grass about 20 times.

You can't post links for 7 days after joining. You can however post pictures.

It's a slug. I have lots of colors - white, brown, tan. They're disgusting! I fling them out into the middle of the lawn for the birds to eat.
